London and the rest of the world had their chance. Now it's time for celebrations to take place right here at home. Leading events management company espAfrika has been appointed the official event organiser of The Madiba Concert, a musical celebration of the 90th birthday of former president Nelson Rohihlahla Mandela.

Hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the concert will take place at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday, August 23, 2008, from 10am.

espAfrika are the producers of the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival, now rated the 4th leading jazz festival in the world. Over the years, the company has built up an international reputation for managing events ranging from festivals and presidential imbizos and inaugurations to extravaganzas, musical and sports tours.

Said Rashid Lombard, CEO of espAFRIKA: “It is a huge honour for espAfrika to be appointed the official event organiser of The Madiba Concert. We plan a very special African celebration for a wonderful man and an international icon who has done so much to make the world a better place for all its peoples.”

Several leading artists from South Africa and African countries such as Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have already confirmed their attendance.

The line-up includes artists such as Baaba Maal, Dorothy Masuka, Jonas Gwangwa, Jimmy Dludlu, Kampi Moto, Karen Zoid, In-Cha, Jae, Danny K, Vicky Sampson, Jennifer Jones, Thandiswa Mazwai, Judith Sephuma and Josie Fields.

Besides these leading artists, there will be performances by a choir and praise singers, as well as on traditional instruments. Archival footage of Mandela’s life will also be shown.

In a children’s programme, there will be performances by DJ Switch and NKD.
