REVIEW

A lot of people, including myself, are a bit disappointed with Kenny Lattimore because we were all expecting original songs when we learnt that he was working on a new album. I mean, he issued 2 successive albums of duets with wife Chante Moore in the past few years, which were all remakes of other artists' work. Although these were great, especially the first one, Things That Lovers Do, it would have been nice to hear something he created from scratch.

Having said that, Kenny Lattimore's vocal abilities are undisputed. Therefore he does justice in the interpretation of some of the greatest songs ever written in music history. The first song I heard on the radio before I even knew the album was out (the DJ introduced the song as one from his new album), was Aretha Franklin's Ain't No Way. I thought to myself, damn, he killed (in a good way) that Aretha Franklin classic. But at the back of my mind wished it was the only remake on the album.

Anyway, when I listened to the aptly titled Timeless, I began to understand why he had gone through that route and he even echoes the sentiments of gratitude to the writers and singers who worked on those timeless jams on the album sleeve. Obviously, Ain't No Way instantly became a favourite. Other noteworthy songs are Stevie Wonder's It Ain't No Use, Terence Trent D'Arby's Undeniably, and Al Green's Something, which Kenny opens the album with.

And I have to make a special mention of Donny Hathaway's Giving Up. Some may remember Jennifer Holiday's soul-stirring rendition of this emotion-evoking classic from the Why Did I Get Married soundtrack. Kenny does a phenomenal job as well, his delivery as strong and emotion-laced as ever. It's no secret what great deal of inspiration Donny Hathaway is to Kenny Lattimore; he also delivered the goods on another classic of his, I Love More Than You'll Ever Know, from his From The Soul Of Man disc. Undeniably, Kenny Lattimore is one of most prolific and extraordinary vocalists in the soul music genre. Kenny also gets another point for doing songs that haven't been re-done by a thousand other singers and introducing us to music we would probably not have known about.

YEAHBO.DOT.NET gives it 3/5 stars.
