REVIEW
D'Angelo has released 2 albums so far, both of them enjoying critital and commercial acclaim throughout the wrold. When he released Brown Sugar, his debut album, he was only 19 and music lovers were ecstatic and viewed him as musical's second coming. There was reason too. He took Smokey Robinson's smooth falsetto style and Prince's guitar (and other instruments) genius to another level. Voodoo, his sophomore cut, proved to be another charm for him, earning him two Grammys for the single Untitled (How Does It Feel) in the Best R&B Male Performance and R&B Album Of The Year. Ladies lost their minds too at the video of the very same song, where he was shot topless and the camera showed the whole area down to just the beginning of his upper limbs. But that's beside the point here.
The point is that D'Angelo has packaged some of the best singles and songs that featured in both Brown Sugar and Voodoo and suitably titled it The Best So Far. In addition, he roped in some of the work he has done outside of those projects. These include the beautiful duet with Erykah Badu called Your Precious Love, which they did for the Marvin Is 60 tribute album; another duet with fellow neo-soul genre peer Raphael Saadiq, which appeared on Saadiq's album Instant Vintage; a live version of Earth, Wind And Fire's Can't Hide Love, which D'Angelo performed and recorded live at the Jazz Cafe; as well D'Angelo's rendition of a Prince cover of She's Always In My Hair. There are also two amazing songs called I Found My Smile Again and Girl You Need A Change Of Mind, which appeared on the soundtracks of the movies, Space Jam, and Get On The Bus, respectively.
As a bonus, there is a DVD with videos to Lady, Brown Sugar, Untitled (How Does It Feel), the Methodman- and Redman-featured Left And Right, D'Angelo's take on Smokey Robinson's Cruisin', Me And Those Dreamin' Eyes and Send It On, which I really enjoyed watching. I'm definitely looking forward to what D'Angelo will bring us next, but for now, this will do.
YEAHBO.DOT.NET gives it 4/5 stars.
