My experiences as the inaugural brand ambassador for Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch for the past two months have been well-documented. From the moment the great news were announced, to the guided tour I immensely enjoyed, until this very moment, only a week before my tenure comes to an end.

It was a great honour and an absolute pleasure to be associated with this amazing brand. Like I’ve previously written, the ultimate best thing about the whole experience was the people and their everlasting smiles and friendliness.

On top of that unforgettable weekend I spent at Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch, I have to count my visits to what has been like my second home for the duration on my embassadorship, as some of the highlights and special moments. Whether it was just to have a drink, or having a meeting with the team, or just to work and blog using their free wi-fi service, it has been an absolute blast.

Now, the hotel chain is looking for my and Peppetta’s successors as brand ambassadors for both the Melrose Arch and Cape Town branches. If you have seen my blog posts, tweets or twitpics, and Facebook messages; and think you have what it takes to follow in our footsteps, read the flyer below.

Thank you Protea Hotels Fire & Ice family for the memorable experiences. I’ve had an absolute blast. And, I’m looking forward to developing the relationship we have established even more.

Here is a short picture montage of my times at Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch.

I’ve blogged, tweeted and been on Facebook about my Brand Ambassadorship for Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch since learning of the news towards the end of August. One of the perks that came with this amazing experience was a weekend stay at Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch. I finally decided to take this up and packed for a getaway this past weekend.

Where does one begin when they have such an incredible experience?

Ok, as soon as I stepped into the hotel reception to check in on Friday afternoon, the bellboy or porter (somehow I feel salty about calling Lebogang that) rushed on to my side to grab my two bags (one for me and another for my companion for the weekend). He was courteous, inviting and helpful. Upon my getting to the front desk at reception, I was greeted by those bright and natural smiles I had seen during my meeting a few weeks earlier. The effortless registration process alerted me to a smooth stay I would experience.

As we were walking to my room, Lebogang engaged with me, extending more of his friendliness and helpfulness ahead of my weekend.

When I walked into my room I was in awe. Firstly, the rose petals sprinkled on the floor from the door to the bed caught me by sheer surprise. Just as I was admiring the beautifully decorated room, my eyes jumped straight into a bedside table where a huge mirror-frame picture of me stood. As if that wasn’t enough, on top of the bed was a personal note from the General manager, Anton Gillis, welcoming me once again to my new home.

While waiting for my partner in crime for the weekend to arrive from work, I relaxed in the room. Failing to contain my excitement, I made it downstairs to the lounge where I figured it was more suitable to wait. That’s when I also realised that I would have Black Berry issues with the free wireless internet that Fire & Ice! supplies to its guests. However, that would not deter my plans of having the most fun I could. Especially since this service was still available on a personal computer/laptop.

It wasn’t long before my companion arrived. After freshening up, we went back down to the lounge where we ate and drank. When I made the booking, I was also informed that one of the DJ‘s from Hed Kandi was going to be playing on the very same night that I checked in. After our food and drinks, we headed to the bar/outside area where the man was busy on the decks. The crowd was a nice blend of people and the atmosphere relaxed, but still vibey. With various topics in our conversations, the night slipped away.

On the second day, we made it to the breakfast area just in time before the end of what’s know as the most important meal of the day. All Protea Hotels guests enjoy a free breakfast with their stay. And what a breakfast it was. I was overwhelmed by mountains of assorted food types decked out on the buffet tables. This feeling resulted in my indecisiveness about what to eat, hence settled for a light meal. However, I made a mental note for a huge comeback the next morning (laughs).

After the breakfast, we went back to our room. Just as we were about to leave, the cleaners knocked on our door to get our room to a similar state it was just after checking in the day before. We hit the streets of Jozi, handling some appointments and just cruising around in general for a few hours. At some point there was even shopping done at the plush Melrose Arch establishment.

We got back to the hotel in time to watch the second half of the Soweto Derby. After the game, we headed back to the lounge to celebrate the Kaizer Chiefs victory over some soothing lounge sounds and Pina Colada‘s.

As the night hours drew nearer, we joined the other guests at the bar/outside area for dinner. This time we chose to sit in the outside area to enjoy the breeze coming from the swimming pool. The dinner menu was massive, but I was prepared this time. I found the titles of the dishes quite amusing because of their quirky nature. Below is what I ordered and ate:

Starters (Whet Your Appetite)

I chose Vegioli, a butternut and ricotta ravioli dish served in a white wine and sage butter cream sauce. It was priced at R55, a rather reasonable price if you look at the standard of Fire & Ice!

Main Course (Nice To Meat You)

For the main course I orders a dish called La La Lamb. This is French trimmed lamb cutlets marinated, grilled and served with mint raita. On the side, I preferred to soften it up with vegetables. This tallied to R130.

Dessert (Dentist’s Nightmare)

I couldn’t wait to get my taste senses into Simply Delicious, a smooth cocoa-lime cheesecake topped with a Turkish delight and berry coulis, that I ordered for dessert. This only sets you R39.

We had planned to go and enjoy our dessert by chilling by the massive booth-like day beds surrounding the pool. However, they were all occupied so we opted for the over-sized cane chairs that were placed in a rectangle form, closing off any outside contact. We chilled there for a bit, then went back to the lounge, owing to the much chillier weather that had kicked in. This is where we sipped more cocktails. Dinner was divine. We had an absolutely amazing evening.

After a satisfying day, we went back into the room to retire for the night.

On Sunday morning we woke up again for breakfast. Like I said, I planned to make sure I nibbled as much as I could this time around. I had a breakfast fit for a king. Everything I could think of for breakfast was there. That breakfast lasted for the rest of the day, I didn’t feel a need or hunger to eat again.

After this breakfast, we went back to our room to prepare for our check out. Again, this process went smoothly and lasted only a few minutes. We handled whatever we had to and made our way down to the parking lot.

What an absolutely stunning weekend I had at Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch. If you are ever traveling to Jozi or Cape Town, make sure you choose to stay at one of these establishments. What kept me in even more awe was the utterly impeccable customer service from the employees at the hotel. Their ever-present smiles and willingness to assist with anything is certainly a colossal plus for the hotel. As they say, people are what make companies.

Like I’ve mentioned in my previous interactions here and on social media, Protea Hotels are not just in the business of making money, but also giving back to the community. To that end, they are proud affiliates of the Reach For A Dream Foundation. Therefore, if you stay with them, you are also helping in their charity causes.

I can’t think of any hotel I want to book into the next time I’m out of town. It’s got to be Fire & Ice or any of the Protea Hotel‘s throughout the country and some neighbouring countries.

And of course, I was kitted by Hummer Apparrel, as I have been in recent times.

After being made the first ever Brand Ambassador for Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch, it was only natural that I would meet my new family and check out the complete establishment.

That took place earlier this week after making an appointment during the weekend. Since I had only seen the reception area, one of the lounges, and one of the conference centres, before, I was beyond excited to take in, the full hotel and its services.

Upon my arrival I was greeted by the friendly reception stuff who led me to the hotel General Manager‘s (Anton Gillis) office. The first thing that caught my eye was the huge sign that read “Please Disturb” on the window facing the reception area. That produced a huge grin on my face as I thought to myself, “How quirky and fresh!”

I entered the office to be welcomed by a big smile and warm pleasantries from Anton and his new child Charlie (a young poodle he told he had just gotten that past weekend). Whilst waiting for Lethabo Tshikovhi, the hotel’s Marketing Plan Coordinator, he offered me something to drink and whilst we were.

After Lethabo‘s arrival, they both relayed how excited they are of the ambassador programme and having me as part of it. They also shared their objectives; their respective responsibilities, their involvement with the Reach For A Dream foundation through their tea parties and other activities; and what was expected for my duties, etc. On their request, I gave them my brief history and how I got to be involved with what I do at YEAHBO Entertainment. Anton and Lethabo then offered me other opportunities to explore our symbiotic relationship.

As we were chatting, I couldn’t help thinking about how blessed I am to meet them as ideas of how we could extend our dealings flowed through my head.

After that session, Lethabo gladly took me through the tour of the hotel. During the guided tour, I got to meet different members of the staff, including the restaurant chef and his team; the clean and delicately decorated hotel rooms; the different lounges comprising of extras like day beds and wi-fi internet services (and meeting the cleaners and their supervisor); the elongated classy bar and its eager to please barmen; as well as different conference rooms, including the biggest one where the Top Billing presenter search/auditions were held last year. Lethabo freely shared details about each and every spot of the hotel we went to.

As she guided me outside to the pool area, I could already picture a Sunday session with friends, just chilling and reflecting on the going ons of the past week and contemplating the week ahead. I also liked the integration of the coffee shop/cafe, where wireless internet services are also available for the guests.

Some of the highlights for me are the lounges that are given an old Hollywood glam look, complete with black and white pictures of generational silver screen bombshells and hunks. Another appealing feature is the lighting at the lounges and the hotel rooms corridors which created a sensual and intimate mood.

As Lethabo continued to show me each corner of the trendy, stylish and impeccable Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch, my mind was busy cogitating about my upcoming stay at the hotel where my experience will be even more grand and close. I certainly can’t wait to be pampered and enjoy all that Fire & ice! Melrose arch has to offer me.

Thank you Anton and Lethabo for the warm welcome. I’m looking forward to seeing you again soon.

I don’t usually write about myself, or my achievements for that matter, here. But I have to mention this because I’m just so ecstatic about it. And I wanna get the word out there about this cool and plush establishment.

Khetha Mkhize and Mvelase Peppetta

A few weeks ago I was approached to be Brand Ambassador for Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! in Melrose Arch. You know I like fine things, right? And after looking at the cool stuff I’ll get to own and experience during my tenure, how could I say no?

Now, I am no stranger to Fire & Ice! in Melrose Arch. My first time there I was interviewing French opera singer Amaury Vassili for this website. Gallo Records couldn’t have chosen an apt location. I was in awe of everything, from the moment I stepped into their reception area. The interior decor is breath taking. Not to mention that the hotel is located in one of the trendiest spots in Johannesburg.

My second time was in the Cape Town branch where I spent some time during last year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The rooms are intimate and warm. My highlight though, this time, was the meal I chose from the hotel’s restaurant’s extensive traditional menu.

My third time, which was the second time in the Melrose Arch hotel, was during the Top Billing presenter search auditions. This time around, I got to see the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice!‘s state of the art conference rooms as I witnessed the presenter hopefuls trying their luck.

My next time is definitely going to be very soon. I can’t wait to immerse myself in all that Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! has to offer me during a weekend’s stay that comes with my package as their Brand Ambassador. It’s gonna be sick! I’ll make sure of that.

Please check out the press release below:

The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! in Cape Town and Melrose Arch are proud to announce the launch of their new ambassador programme.

After an extensive search which trawled the bottomless pool of all the major social networks, two hip young individuals who embrace and embody the spirit of Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! – i.e. hot and cool at the same time – were chosen to represent the brand.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Is the first and last words in trendy urban chic. Not only do they offer their guests a level of comfort and luxury to which they have grown accustomed during their worldly travels, fill their bellies with delicious food and liquid libations, and equipped with staff who anticipate every need, but they are on the cutting edge of design and interior décor.

From the obvious to the subtle, the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Is brimming with eye candy and features to get tongues wagging. And that’s where the ambassadors come in. For the next two months Khetha Mkhize in Jozi and Mvelase Peppetta in the Mother City will be enjoying all the joys and benefits of being a Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! GUEST while tweeting, blogging and Facebooking their experiences to their fans, their followers and the world.

Founder and editor of lifestyle blog www.yeahbo.net, Kheta Mkhize has his finger on the pulse of the vibrant entertainment and nightlife scene in Jozi. Khetha wears the assorted hats of a writer, photographer, graphic designer, content producer, online/social media consultant, software developer and talent manager.

“The first time I went to the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch was to interview French classical singer Aumarie Vassili, and I was blown away. Gallo, the record company, couldn’t have chosen a better location for the interview,” says Kheta, who also visited the Cape Town hotel during the Cape Town International Jazz Festival last year. “The highlight was the scrumptious meal I chose from the traditional dishes at their plush restaurant. Also, hanging out at the bar and the balcony with friends was a treat.”

Twenty-four-year-old Mvelase Peppetta was born in Port Elizabeth but nine years in Cape Town is long enough to qualify him as a local.

“I concern myself with the important things in life,” says Mvelase. “Politics (both international and local), television (the trashier the better) Britney and Madonna, (waiting for their latest releases), and most importantly, my love of bacon.”

Mvelase tweets about these things, a lot, and you can read more at memeburn.com

Look out for these names; they’re going to have a lot to say in the next couple of months.

After much confusion about this year’s edition of the MTN South African Music Awards, the combined launch and announcement of the nominees last week put things at rest and in the right direction. With the announcement on the contenders for the coveted statuettes, it was revealed that the awards ceremonies will be held on the 20th and 21st of May at Montecasino.

Doritos Ambassadors.

As the excitement grows, Doritos have teamed up with the organisors of Mzantsi‘s music awards premier event to offer the general public a chance to win weekly cash prizes and the chance to attend the 17th Annual MTN South African Music Awards with a celebrity in the new Doritos Late Night VIP competition, which runs until mid-May.

The grand prize will see 5 Lucky Entrants get the opportunity to experience a night of indulgent VIP treatment over the weekend of 20 to 22 May – being transported to and accommodated at the 17th Annual South African Music Awards, attending the glittering ceremony, rub shoulders on the yellow carpet and pre drinks with all of Mzantsi’s biggest celebrities and stars, as well as hitting all of the official after-parties.

That is not all, this awesome prize includes the bonus of each winner being able to bring three friends along to the star-studded SAMAs.
You can win in two ways. All you need to do to stand a chance of bulking out your bank account or stepping out in style at one of the most glamorous and star-studded events in the entertainment calender, is to enter the competitions via the Doritos Facebook page, the Doritos mobisite or the MXit mobile application.

Moreover, you can enter the competition right here on YEAHBO. We also have 3 hampers consisting of R500 in cash plus limited edition Doritos Late Night T-Shirts.

For the VIP SAMAs grand prize, fans may enter only once and select a celebrity of their choice to be their partner to the event, as well as inviting up to three friends – who may also enter the competition in their own capacity to increase everyone’s chances of winning.

The draw for the South African Music Awards VIP prize will take place on 13 May. One winner will be chosen for each celebrity date – meaning that there will be five winners of the VIP experience, each choosing three friends to party the weekend away with.

For Coloured Girls, the motion picture adaptation of poet Ntozake Shange‘s 1975 play For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuff, is finally coming to the big screens near you. We wrote about it last year when we learnt that our very own songbird, Zaki Ibrahim (who works between here and Canada), was featured in the original soundtrack of the Tyler Perry-directed, -written, and -produced film.

L-R: Kerry Washington, Phylicia Rashad, and Anika Noni Rode; in For Colored Girls.

Perry has mentioned how difficult a task it was turning the 15 or so poems into a one cohesive body of work. However, he seems to have done a great job because the film went on to win numerous awards, including a clean sweep at the NAACP Image Awards last month. These included the most coveted awards for the night, the Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture (Theatrical or Television) and Outstanding Motion Picture prizes. One of its stars, Kimberly Elise, also walked away Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Elise stars alongside a sterling line up of actors that include Phylicia Rashad, Kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, and Janet Jackson; as well as Hill Harper, Michael Ealy, Omari Hardwick and Khalil Kain holding the forte for the males. I remember a telephone conversation I had with Lynn Whitfield a few years ago when she was promoting Madea’s Family Reunion, another Perry film. She spoke about her role in the stage version of For Colored Girls and how emotionally taxing she said her role was. Although I would have loved to see her enrolled for the film version, I’m still happy with the talent cast for it.

Now, Ster-Kinekor is hosting a red-carpet premiere event for For Coloured Girls on Wednesday, 11 May at the Ster-Kinekor The Zone theatre in Rosebank. To make it extra special, the premiere will feature a live performance by Zaki Ibrahim. She will sing the track featured on the soundtrack that also boasts musical powerhouses like Gladys Knight, Lalah Hathaway, Nina Simone, Estelle, Janelle Monae and Laura Izabor, to mention a few.

Guests will also be treated to cocktails, snacks as well as coke and popcorn as they enjoy the film after the pre-cocktail reception.

A few weeks ago Metro FM‘s William Lehong got in touch with me, on Destiny Man editor Kojo Baffoe‘s recommendation. He was putting together a team that would take part in a Volvo Ride And Drive Experience at Swartzkops Race Track, courtesy of Volvo Midrand.

McCarthy Volvo Midrand from outside (photo courtesy of their website)

That full day of test driving Volvo‘s new car models took place last week Tuesday. I invited a friend of mine, Thabiso Santho, because I know he’s a car enthusiast. I mean, the guy follows Formula 1 every single weekend. Well, during the F1 seasons, of course. Because he is more knowledgeable about cars than I am, I let him write about the whole experience. Below is his detailed encounter of the Volvo Ride And Drive, that was also attended by the likes of Supersport‘s The NFD Show anchor Mpho Maboi, as well as Kaya FM producer (for T-bose‘s Best T In The City show) and Motswako content producer Fentse Mogomotsi.

The day started at the Volvo dealership in Midrand, where the Volvo management briefed us on the upcoming day’s events, the rules, regulations, format and so forth. We then proceeded outside where our fleet of Volvo cars, consisting of the S60 T6, S60 T4, C70, C30, S40, S60 D5, CX60 and a few others, were parked with keys in them just waiting for us to jump in. The cars were numbered and we had to follow the specific order of the numbers as we left in a convoy to the Zwartkops Raceway in Centurion, where the first half of the day would be held.

Volvo S60 T4 (photo from McCarthy Volvo Midrand website)

Before we began at Zwartkops, we were given a brief history of where the Volvo brand comes from and its evolution up to this day. The first event was on a wet skid pad next to racetrack. It was setup to demonstrate how Volvo’s ABS system can assist the driver to retain control of the car during hard-braking, as opposed to a car without ABS, which would just slide forward in similar conditions because of locked wheels. For this exercise we used one car with all the driver assistance features switched off, including ABS, and another car was with the same features switched on.

We were divided into two teams, with one team in the C30 with ABS and other team in the S60 ABS switched off. In each team we took turns in our assigned cars driving as fast we could into the wet skid pad and slamming hard on the brakes to lock the wheels and then try to steer the car to the right while it was skidding.

Volvo XC60 (photo from the Volvo website)

It felt weird in the car without ABS, frantically turning the steering wheel but nothing happening, while the car just helplessly slid along forward. After all team members had their turn, we swapped cars so we can do the same thing in the other car with ABS to see the difference. ABS does make all the difference, because after breaking hard and turning the steering wheel, the car responded immediately and turned to the right, which would be helpful in avoiding a collision.

Then there was the cone challenge on the same skip pad, where team members would compete for the quickest time to complete the circuit without bumping any of the cones along the way. The instructor gave us a walk-through of the specific path we had to follow between the cones. For this we used the Volvo C30. This was a lot of fun to do and to watch, as some people knocked over cones, some stalled the car, and some lost their way completely, especially the part where we had to go through cones in a figure of eight at the end. I think the winner did the circuit in 48 seconds if I’m not mistaken. There was a rumour that he had been there before .

Mpho Maboi chatting with Musa Kalenga during lunch a Amanzingwe.

Next up was the demonstration of Volvo’s innovative safety feature called Collision Warning with Auto-Braking (CWAB) with Pedestrian Detection on the S60 T6 model. This collision avoidance technology can warn you if you’re too close to a vehicle in front of you or if there are pedestrians in your path. If you don’t react and it senses a collision is about to happen, full auto-braking is engaged to help you avoid or mitigate an impact. There were two objects placed in our way, one to simulate a traffic condition when a car in front suddenly stops in slow moving traffic, and the other was a blow up doll named Bob, to represent a pedestrian.

We were instructed to drive towards the object as if you are in normal traffic but not to hit the brakes. The car immediately auto-braked stopped just before the object in the way. Then it was on to Bob the pedestrian, to see if we could knock him down with car. I must say that Bob is very confident of the Volvo’s system because I drove towards him fast and he didn’t flinch at all. The car just came to a dead stop when the system sensed him in front. This system is a marvel to witness and works brilliantly. Something definitely needed on our South African roads.

Fentse, William and Mpho's sister, Lerato, all digging in at lunch.

Once we wrapped up at the skid pad we went over to the race track for some hot laps. This was a good way to experience the speed and handling of these cars through the corners. We all followed each other into the track and did three laps following each other and pulled into the pit-lane to change cars. This was done so that everybody would get a chance in different cars, and we repeated the process every three laps. It was really cool popping into the pit-lane and quickly jumping in the car behind you and quickly pulling off again. After the final lap we each got a turn to ride in the S60 T6 and S60 D5 (Diesel) cars as passengers, with the instructors at the wheel. They did some really fast laps with us to demonstrate the great handling and speed of these cars on a track.

We then left Zwartkops Raceway in a convoy and proceeded on a long and bumpy drive to the Amanzingwe Lodge in the Hartebees region. On this particular trip I sat comfortably in the backseat of the S60 T6. It is definitely one of the most beautiful Volvos out there with an impressive luxurious interior is well. The beautiful soft tan leather seats, with the internal door panels lined with the sme leather as well, completed the look. I also liked the air-vents on the middle pillar for passengers at the back.

The complete Volvo Ride And Drive group posing outside Amanzingwe.

We had a delicious buffet lunch at Amanzingwe Lodge and then headed back to Midrand, but this time using a different route so we can experience freeway driving in the cars. This time I got to drive off in the same S60 T6 I came in. I switched between manual and auto to feel the difference and they’re both fun and the pull off is very good on both options. After a while we stopped to switch cars and I got to be a passenger the diesel S60 D5. It’s just as comfortable as the T6 and sure has some oomph as well. The seat massager was on which made it even more enjoyable. At the next switch I was lucky to jump into the driver seat of C70 convertible for some open air driving. Though not as powerful as the S60 T6, it still holds its own on the road and a pleasure to drive, especially at high speeds with the top down. We then stopped at a Total garage on the N14 for the last stop before heading back to Volvo Midrand.

Upon arrival we had a final briefing to wrap up the day, then a little prize giving ceremony for the people that won the challenges and a few thank you messages from the Volvo management team. In conclusion, it was an incredibly fun and informative day for all. An event like this is the best way to really experience a car. My view of Volvo has definitely changed and I think they’re up there with the best of them. On behalf of everybody, I would like to thank Volvo Midrand and everybody involved in making this event happen.

Written by Thabiso Santho.

Khetha‘s note: Thank you so much to Volvo Midrand and William Lehong for this experience. Although I came late, I was able to immensely enjoy the second half of Volvo Ride And Drive day. From the cars I drove, the T6 and T4 are right at the top. I also always felt like Volvo cars were created for older people, but driving them changed my perception. And when I’m in the market for a new car, I’ll definitely consider the Volvo brand.

Oh, and if you want to see the views of other people that participated, search for the hash tag #VolvoRide&Drive on Twitter.
