This past September I attended the rehearsals for Mzansi Love Soul festival, and subsequently the Friday show. You may remember my write up about it where I mentioned that one of the artists on the line up, Brian Temba, let me listen to (and watch) his fresh and new single (video) off his yet untitled upcoming album. Guess what?

Today is Brian Temba‘s birthday. And as a treat to his fans, he has decided to share the video for the song This Is My Time with them. I’ve said my piece about the song already HERE, now it’s your chance to listen and watch, then tell us what you think of it.

And it doesn’t end there. A few weeks ago, Brian Temba sent me two more tracks from his upcoming sophomore album. On his special day, we have decided to share them with you, for a limited period. The first track is called I’ll Wait and the second one, Zanele. Take a listen below and share your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom. NB! These tracks will only be available during his birthday weekend.

Brian Temba – I’ll Wait (Update: Audio has been removed)

As I mentioned to Brian after I listened to the music, I love this track. There are many things I like about it. Firstly, I appreciate that he toned down his vocals, which works perfectly for a more uptempo tune. Secondly, I totally dig the vocal arrangements. Even the background vocals are on point. The only let down are the horns featured on the production. I wish they were more sharp so that they stand out.

Brian Temba – Zanele (Update: Audio has been removed)

Now this, this right here, is a beautiful song. From the live instrumentation to the lyrics, to the vocal delivery. I can picture Brian singing it with a live band at a jazz festival. I can also picture Zanele‘s (the ladies) screaming their lungs out as he performs it. LOL. But seriously, I love the mellow, jazzy feel to it. A Zulu ballad has never sounded so wonderful.

And oh, happy birthday Brian. May the Lord grant you many, many more years so that you continue to bless us with your soul and inspiring words. May you have an effulgent one! Have a blast!

I don’t usually post music videos here but after my interactions with Rob Murat and viewing his new video for the song titled “Know…“, I just had to.

Just a bit about the young man. I met Rob Murat on Twitter almost two years ago. The New York native is an Ivy League graduate. I’ve listened to his music since our meeting and fell in love with his soulful sound and distinctive voice. Having recorded music and performed sold out shows since his introduction into the industry, Rob is also a budding actor who has appeared in TV commercials and TV series. Moreover, he is a notable humanitarian whose efforts for the devastating Haiti disasters have been well documented.

Now, the video for his song “Know…” came out a few weeks ago. He sent me the link, but being from “Africa“, the platform it was posted on didn’t allow me access. Rob promised to load the video on YouTube and let me know as soon as he had done so. I gather he is also a man of his word as he has just sent me the link to the video.

I’ve watched the video and totally love it. The song alone is beautifully constructed, from the wholesome sound to the impeccably written lyrics; from its infectious melody to the exceptionally delivered vocals. The concept of the video is dope, the images and their motion nothing short of top notch. Please check it out below and let me know what you think.

For more information Rob Murat and his work, go to robmurat.com or follow him on Twitter.

It’s still a few months away, but the first headliner for the Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz Festival taking place in August has been announced. It’s none other than trumpeter, composer, bandleader, music educator, and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Below is what the press release says about Wynton‘s appearance at the renowned annual jazz festival.

Jazz great Wynton Marsalis – winner of nine Grammy Awards® and the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music – is the headline act at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz which runs in Johannesburg from August 25 to 27.

Marsalis will perform at Emperor’s Palace on Thursday August 25 and Saturday August 27 on the Dinaledi stage in Newtown.

The legendary trumpeter whose creativity has been celebrated throughout the world is arguably the biggest jazz artist to come to South Africa.

Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He is the world’s first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop and modern jazz.

By creating and performing an expansive range of new music for quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras, tap dance to ballet, Wynton has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers.

Marsalis is currently the Artistic Director of Jazz at New York’s famous Lincoln Center.

Festival promoter, Peter Tladi of T-Musicman says: “Wynton’s visit is going to shake up the local jazz scene. Three of the Marsalis brothers – Branford, Delfeayo and Jason – have already performed at Standard Bank Joy of Jazz but this is the big one. It is a real coup for the festival.”

Commented Mandie van der Spuy, Head of Art & Jazz Sponsorships Standard Bank: “Standard Bank prides itself on giving jazz lovers a weekend to remember. Our continued support for Joy of Jazz has seen this prominent social music fixture grow in stature each year. We are delighted to help celebrate a rich and warm blend of African and international jazz in the heart of Johannesburg, bringing jazz lovers together in a truly united and global celebration of jazz and its heritage.”

Tladi added: “Having Wynton Marsalis headline the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will once again put Jozi on the international jazz map. We will be releasing the names of other exciting artists closer to the festival which we predict will be a sell-out like last year.”

The 2011 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is produced by T-Musicman and presented by Standard Bank.

Ticket sales for the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will be available from Computicket in mid-June.

I’m looking forward to more artists to be announced over the next few months.

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Vikter Duplaix, as many would know, was in South Africa this past weekend. I was supposed to go to his show in Pretoria but due to circumstances beyond my control I couldn’t. I did however attend his show which was held at Le Mix in Newtown in Johannesburg on Saturday evening. I almost didn’t write about this because of some politics I won’t go into now, but realised that he had nothing to do with it at all. Therefore you get to read about it now.

Vikter Duplaix at the rooftop after our short interview

Before his performance, I got some time to briefly chat with him. When asked if his expectations about South Africa were met, he said he he didn’t have any. He did share though that he feels people here are very special and admires them for something he shares with them, the love for music. He continued to praise the fantastic reception he got from everybody. Vikter did admit that he would have loved to perform with the band, however, to see if the response would have been the same.

To this end, he does want to “hurry up and come back,” as he put it. His plan is to certainly nourish the relationship he has established.

Vikter on the decks

Many of his fans around the world may have heard him on Tumelo Ruele‘s song he is featured in called All Alone. He relayed the story of how it came about. Black Coffee sent him a track and asked him to write to it. The interesting part is that Black Coffee didn’t mention to him that he already had Tumelo‘s vocals. The award-winning local DJ then combined the two tracks, hence the collaboration you hear on Tumelo‘s Arise And Shine album. Amongst more local artists Vikter would like to work with are Liquideep, BOP and obviously the legendary Hugh Masekela. He even professed that he likes Professor for his energy.

Vikter started singing as he was playing.

With the Grammy Awards nominations announced just a few weeks ago, Vikter quipped in his views on the world’s biggest music award entity. He feels the award institutions like the Grammy‘s are important because one gets recognition from one’s peers for great work. He also emphasised the vital role the Grammy committee could play by encompassing independently released music as well. The challenge of getting the music out there is felt greatly by these artists because there is no support structure like that of a major label. Another important fact he pointed out was how the industry is getting smaller, yet difficult for artists to promote their music.

Vikter serenading the crowd

Having been very particular with how he shapes his craft, Vikter revealed his concern about the originality in music being not as vast. At the same token, he explained that this doesn’t mean the quality is bad. This is what he said he loves about South African music, the zeal and spirit of its musicians and artists to do their own thing. Vikter sharply uttered that the backing of a major label is not everything.

To close our conversation off, he shared that the legacy he wants to leave behind as Vikter Duplaix is that of doing everything in high quality, whether it’s conversations he engages in, music he produces or just enjoying his life. This chat confirmed the impression I had of Vikter from his music and my conversations with him online before this encounter. He’s an immensely talented; deeply passionate and confident about his music and life; and a kind soul.

Vikter back on the decks

Although the show was not well-attended, Vikter gave us a great show. He made us dance, made us sing along to his songs, made us scream and throw our hands in the air. Feeling we hadn’t had enough with his DJ set, he decided to give us an impromptu performance behind the mic on the small stage that was set up. The audience went crazy as he belted out some of his very popular songs, including a rousing rendition of his seductive hit Make A Baby. Other performances included that of Zano, who is destined for a great career because of his amazing talent; as well as Liquideep, whose segment I missed because I was involved with the politics I mentioned earlier.

Zano singing his heart out

It was truly a wonderful show. I can’t wait for Vikter Duplaix to come back with his live band and give us more. During his set, he even told us that if we have to, we must even get President Jacob Zuma to make that happen. I hope South African promoters heed to this call.

Last night I attended singer and songwriter Brian Temba‘s birthday party at the Jabulani centre at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank. Having had a chat with his manager Mandisa Makalima earlier in the day, I was looking forward to seeing how everything would pan out.

One of the cakes, modeled after the Oscar.

When I arrived at the hotel, things were a bit slow, people trickling in slowly and parsley. However, this was undoubtedly not a sign of things awaiting us. As soon as the proceedings began, the air in the room warmed up and got upbeat. There were so many moments that made Brain Temba‘s birthday so much more special that he’d ever imagined.

One such moment was the performances from three of Mzansi‘s finest singers and musicians. First on the stage was Donald who got the guests in the mood with his sweet, yet powerful and striking voice. I had a chat with him later on, telling him about the first time I saw him perform at one of the 2010 FIFA World Cup fan parks at Sandton Convention Centre and the brief write-up I did after that experience. He sounds very focused and smart from the engaging chat we had.

Donald performing.

After Donald, Afrotraction took to the stage to give us a taste of what he can do. His intonation when he sings is clearly pronounced and a remarkable treat to hear. I had also met him earlier and during our brief chat discovered how down-to-earth he is. We definitely need to see more of and support this kind of talent in Mzansi.

Afrotraction performing.

And then the performance that blew the lid off from the guest singers came from Durban‘s own MLU. His vocal range is something many singers dream of. When he hit those high notes, everybody would scream and clap. I personally believe he can hold his against singers like Rahsaan Patterson and Tevin Campbell. And especially after listening to his album Music Lovan Unity that he gave me a copy of last night. When I had a chat with MLU, he told me that he’s still shopping for a distribution deal for this album here in Mzansi. He also mentioned that he is still in the country until March next year, after which he leaves to perform at a Peace concert in Sudan ahead of his return to Australia (where he’s been based for the past few years).

MLU performing.

Another special moment took place when the three guys above displayed their improvisation skills as they composed a song right there, dedicating to Brian Temba before he took to the stage to do what he does best. He belted it out, beginning with a new song slated for his upcoming album. I totally loved the beat and the vocals were on point as usual. He continued to serenade everybody with songs from his debut album Something Better.

During his performance, Brian announced that Hilary Mwelwa of Hil St. Soul was in the house. I must admit I saw her when she arrived, she smiled at me and I smiled back. At the back of my head I was like “I know this lady”, but couldn’t pinpoint where I know her from. Anyway, she joined Brian on stage. Just seconds later, Afrotraction was on the keyboard supporting her as she belted out Aretha Franklin‘s Until You Come Back To Me, a song made more popular by Luther Vandross when he added his own touch and called it Superstar/Until You Came Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do). Yet another special moment. Brian introduced me to her later on. I was so star-struck I found myself singing, “Don’t forget the GHETTO” to her; a song from the UK outfit’s album Black Rose. She mentioned that she has a gig at the Radisson Blue in Sandton tomorrow night, and invited me to come through.

Brian closed off his segment with one of my favourite songs from Something Better called Early Morning. I swear I literally got goosebumps as he did the last bit of the song that made me instantly fall in love with the mellow tune the first time I heard it. And then another precious moment ensued as the quartet performed a medley of songs ranging from Boy II Men‘s I’ll Make Love To You to Bill Withers‘ Lovely Day to R. Kelly‘s Happy People; and even engaging in the step dance R Kelly does in the video of the song.

Men of song getting down to Happy People.

The other guys then remained on stage to sing “Happy Birthday” as Brian Temba cut his birthday cakes and enjoyed a piece in full view of the guests. As you can see from the pictures, one cake was a Domino (made after his hit single Dominoes) and the other an Oscar (as in Academy Award statuette – don’t laugh at its resemblance to the peen, LOL).

The family posed for pictures in front of the birthday cake before yet another memorable moment took place. Thanks to Brian and Donald, I experienced the most chilling and rousing rendition of This Woman’s Work. Kate Bush would be absolutely proud and mesmerised to hear such a sterling take on her classic.

Brian and Donald singing This Woman's Work.

As if that was not enough, another special moment was in order, courtesy of Kaya FM‘s station manager Greg Maloka. This was the biggest for the night and so fitting to be announced at the end of the event. We were watching with bated breathes as Greg announced that Kaya FM is giving Brian, as a birthday gift, R200 000 in support of promoting his upcoming album. I’d say I’m looking forward to, for one, brilliant music videos from that album. And I can just imagine how everything will be of the quality standard Brian has set with his debut album.

Greg about to announce the birthday gift from Kaya FM.

It was such a fun night, filled with beautiful music and beautiful people enjoying and celebrating with the man of the moment. Happy birthday again Brian. I’m so proud of you. Keep giving us that amazing music.

Below are more pictures from the special night, Brian Temba’s birthday party.

Greg Maloka with model and ballerina Kitty. Wouldn’t they make a lovely couple? Mandisa is pictured here twice. Firstly, with the lady who was the MC. I don’t really know who she is or what she does, but I have seen her at events before. I even saw her perform with a band at Moyo’s at Zoo Lake once. She was horrific as the MC. Most of the time I was dumbfounded at things she said or did. She did have her moments though. The second, the guy is cheesing so hard. Maybe he likes how Mandisa placed her hands on his chest. I sense some nipple play tendencies there.

Earlier this evening I had the utmost pleasure of speaking with one of my most favourites, and one of the most revered R&B/Soul musicians, Eric Benét.

When I was presented with an opportunity to speak with Eric Benét as he promotes his new studio album Lost In Time, I got giddy with excitement. Soon that joy turned into anxiety as my mind started racing about what I would ask him. It wasn’t until late this afternoon that I felt more calm as I carefully singled out questions a fan of his like me would appreciate getting answers to. Admittedly, the fact that I only had 20 minutes with the crooner also had a hand in this process of assimilation. And then the time grew closer and closer. The anxiety returned.

As we exchanged pleasantries and he pronounced my name correctly, I relaxed again. I was actually impressed that he got it absolutely right without any coaching, not from my side at least. But I digress. Eric spoke kindly of his upbringing, praising his family for encouraging him to follow his dreams. As the younger of five siblings, he was blessed to have his brother and sisters, as well as his parents, telling him he could be anything he wanted to be. This message ended up being ingrained in his mind, resulting in his pursuit of music as a career.

Of course having a very musical family, as well as listening to Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind & Fire and Donny Hathaway, amongst others; impacted on his decision to become a musician. And being a child in the 70‘s definitely shaped the way his music sounds because it was the norm hearing the elements he infuses into his own music. He feels this is the era he fell in love with the music, an absolute blueprint to what he does today. Speaking of his influences, on his new album he features iconic soul maestro Eddie Levert on a song examining the economic state the world is in called Paid. He mused about how working with The O’Jays front-man was a dream come true for him. He added, “He’s a beautiful person. Full of love, laughs and smiles; and plenty of stories of growing up.”

Eric doesn’t shy away from his stance to only work with singers that possess powerful voices for his collaborations. Amongst these are the likes of Faith Evans and Tamia, whom he did Georgie Porgy and Spend My Life With You with, respectively, on A Day In The Life. He shared that this is his first priority, the voice. He then added that the song has to match the singer he selects. Eric made an example of how some songs are like a prayer, thus needing subtlety when one handles them. He emphasised that every singer has their own texture, and searches for what that singer will sound like. This is the very same reason he has reunited with Faith Evans for another duet on Lost In Time. Other ladies who made the cut as part of this elite group are Chrisette Michelle on a soulful, old school jam called Take It; Ledisi on a disco song titled Good Life; as well as his daughter India on the jovial Summer Love.

On comparing the new project to his previous offering, he shared that Love And Life was almost like a prequel to Lost In Time. Eric explained how the former represented the sound of the old school R&B. On the other hand, Lost In Time pinpoints the late 70‘s. From the writing inspiration, to the live recording of each and every instrument, it’s an odyssey back into that era. And having Eddie Levert on it is a stamp of approval for authenticity in that regard.

When Eric sings, the lyrics, mood and tone is heart-felt. This emanates from his attempt to always be as vulnerable as he can. Letting his guard down allows him to create music from its purest form. The process thus becomes easy for him. He lets the melody speak first. He lets it tell him what the lyrics to the song are. The smooth and velvet-voiced singer and songwriter explained how each melody has its distinct emotion that he taps into. However, he’s not oblivious to the fact that everything has been said as far as the words are concerned. Therefore the trick he’s mastered is saying it in an honest and truthful way that will resonate with people.

Perhaps it is this approach that has garnered him a few Grammy nominations and clinched him a few other awards along the way. When asked if award institutions are representative of the quality of music, he was quick to dispute it as he sharply responded, “a definite answer is no”, then laughing. He feels it’s not the only criteria to judge how good music is. He added that more of these awards are a popularity contest. Eric cautioned that whether you win or lose, you should take it with a grain of salt. Although one must feel good about winning, the converse of that is to not feel you are the best. He suggested that it may just mean that one may have a bigger machine behind them. The soulful singer then highlighted how important it is that he doesn’t do music for the awards, but for the goosebumps he feels when he creates his magic.

Eric is not just sensible about his craft, but also has a good heart for the rest of humanity. These are some of the traits that led him to record a charity song with Michael McDonald, Wynonna Judd as well as Terry Dexter (who he’s worked with a few more times, the recent being a duet on Love And Life) that raised millions of dollars for the destitute post Hurricane Katrina. He uttered that every time a tragedy like Katrina happens, it touches one in an incredible way. Being able to offer help this way was a great feeling for him. He’s elated about the fact that when he looks back at his life, he’s proud of what he did.

Although he was modest about counting this amazing deed amongst what will be engraved in his legacy, he admitted out that he just wants people to be still singing his songs when he is no longer in this earth. Having somebody somewhere singing Spend My Life With You at their wedding is enough for him. And he feels that this is what most songwriters wish for.

When I mentioned on Twitter and Facebook that I’d be speaking to Eric Benét, I got many requests from people to ask him when he’ll be coming to South Africa. So, I told him about this. He excitedly said he would love to be back and that he was speaking to the label management abut making this a reality. The good news is that he is looking at the first quarter of 2011 to make this happen, but for now nothing has been set in stone. I’m one of the people who won’t miss that concert for anything in the world. Besides being a fan of his music since the days of Femininity, speaking with him on the phone tonight escalated the adulation I have for him. His spirit and kindness shines from each and every word he utters.

Eric Benét‘s new album Lost In Time is out in stores from next week. Go and buy yourself a copy. I heard the first single Sometimes I Cry a few months ago and immensely loved it. I also listened to the duet with Eddie Levert called Paid earlier today which instantly took me with its funky nature that reminded me of The O’Jays‘ Backstabbers album. I can’t wait to hear the album in its entirety. [UPDATE: listening to the album right now on the exclusive stream on the Essence website. WOW! Eric unmistakably has another winner on his hands]

Last night I got to see the newly reconstructed/refurbished former club Moloko, now called Hush, for the first time. The transformation is amazing, I’m just not sure if it classy and elegant enough after being hosted in much dasher clubs in recent months. But that’s neither here nor there. The reason I was there was to learn who made it to the top 3 in each category for the 10th Metro FM Music Awards that will be taking place at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on the 27th of November 2010.

Although the event went smoother that the launch (see our review of that event HERE), it wasn’t drama-free altogether. I spoke to a few people from record companies, including artist DJ Cleo, about there not being enough access tags, so they couldn’t get the same privileges (like free booze, well, that’s the only benefit really) as other invited guests. DJ Cleo went to an extent of saying he didn’t really need to be there, they wanted him there. Well, I kinda get his point. It was good to see Kina Nhlengethwa from Metro FM tending to him in an attempt to rectify this absurd fumble.

After being inside for a while only seeing the likes of DJ Kent chilling with Relo, I jetted outside to realise that many more familiar faces were chilling there and some being interviewed by LIVE presenter Minnie Dlamini and Metro FM jock Tbo Touch. Speaking of Minnie, it was so funny when she said to Speedy and Staon that they are seen everywhere together and asked if they are dating.

After snapping a few pics, I headed back in just in time for the announcement of the award finalists. Minnie and Tbo Touch were also the hosts for the night and they did a great job, albeit name-dropping about who was in the house. In between the nominee announcement, there were performances from the likes of Relo featuring DJ Kent on the decks and HHP. Big Nuz, who were joined by fellow Durbanites DJ Tira, DJ FisherMan and L’Vovo to close out the performances with a bang.

Here are some pictures that were taken from last night:

Relo chilling with her fiance
Sorry, I don’t know what his name (UPDATE: his name is Rocky, according to Grant Monareng) is but remember some drama regarding an ex of his that was in the papers. Anyway, Relo performed later with DJ Kent and they have been nominated for their collaboration Let’s Fall In Love Again in the Hit Single Of The Year and Best Collaboration Of The Year categories. Relo really cleans up nicely and has continuously looked very classy and elegant after the days of Skwatta Kamp.

DJ Kent before performing with Relo. He’s been nominated for Hit Single Of The Year and Best Collaboration Of The Year with Relo for their collabo Let’s Fall In Love Again; as well as Best Produced Album.

DJ Sbu entertaining the crowds and chatting on the phone at the same time. I didn’t know men could multi-task. Just kidding. I see he is promoting this t-shirt line of his like crazy eh?!

HHP with his sidekicks who hounded me to take a picture of them just before I realised they were with Jabba. SMH! HHP was on the performances line-up for the night. He is nominated for Best Hip Hop Album and Best Male Album.

DJ Tira with his music bag. He performed with Big Nuz and L’vovo later on. DJ Tira is not nominated for any award but he’ll be riding the gravy train because he is the boss to these guys. Must be nice!

Brian Temba with manager Mandisa Makalima. Brian is not nominated for anything. He didn’t even make it to top 5 but he was there for the support to fellow peers. Now that’s what i call a true artist.

Deep Level before they learn that they are up for Best Group Album and Best Hip Hop Album. Like I’ve said before, they deserve the recognition, hardworking duo that.

DJ Cleo before sharing his debacle. He is nominated for Best Collaboration Album (on is collabo with Baba Mthethwa – soccer commentator a singer, Mama I Wanna Sing!) and Best Male Album.

Nothende was there to show support as well. Look at those curves! She’s been hustling for a bit, gotta give her props for sticking it out. Her debut album is finally coming out at the end of the month.

Actress Sophie Ndaba is such a socialite. Tjo! Those mammaries! Hide that ish sisi. She was walking up and down the most of the evening. She’s very sweet there.

There is too much going on in this picture with Stoan and Speedy. Can you taste the MultiOros vitamin? LOL. The two are nominated for Best Collaboration Of The Year and Best Music Video for their song Second Sunrise.

Lulo Cafe is always smiles. He is up for Best Compilation Album. It’s a tight one between him, Ganyani and Vinnie. Vinnie is an OG, but let’s see who will take it.

Phila catching up with former LIVE co-presenter Minnie. Phila is nominated for Best African Pop, Best Newcomer and Best Styled Artist. The boy is on a roll.

Khabonina was also there to show some support. I just love her bursting energy and positivity. I saw her dancing to Big Nuz as they performed.

David Kau was there too. Saw his tweet earlier in the day asking if they’d be a cash bar only. He asked me what this picture is for. I told him I’ll tell him after I’ve taken it and when I was done he just zoomed out. Does it make a difference anyway? SMH.

Thatha Vista. LOL. Publicist Vista Kalipa with Kuli Roberts. He is wearing a David Tlale creation. As you were. I always wanted to say that. LOL.

Relo and DJ Kent> performing Gift Of Lifeand the currently nominated song Let’s Fall In Love Again. Relo can really blow! (No pun intended)

Minnie and Tbo Touch were the hosts for the night announcing the different categories and the performances. Minnie has a banging body. WOW! They did good.

HHP performed with a guy called Casper (from the pic above) together with their water carrier on the sides. I laughed when I saw the carrier with a cigar on one hand and a bottle of water on the other. What swag is that? I always wanted to say that too. LOL.

The Durban boys performing. Big Nuz, DJ Tira, L’Vovo and DJ FisherMan on the decks. L’Vovo is nominated for Best kwaito Album while DJ FisherMan is vying for Best Newcomer and Song Of the Year

I can spot so many faces here, enjoying Durban kwaito as well. Tell me who you can spot.

Although the finalists announcement event was not all that, it was certainly much better than the horrendous spectacle that took place at the awards launch. Now the roads lead to Nelspruit on the 27th to see who will be crown victors in the respective categories. If we do get an invite, we’ll be sure to bring you more action from the 10th Metro FM Music Awards.

DJ heavyweight and producer Louie Vega is on an African tour, and made a stop in South Africa where he is probably most loved. Kaya FM took this opportunity to bring the man to Jozi last week. The main aim was to introduce the Masters At Work co-founder to the media as part of the Kaya FM family since he started doing mixes for the regional station not too long ago.

Anena, Louie and Black Coffee

Accompanying him was his wife and house vocalist Anena Vega. Joining them at the press conference held at the Park Hyatt hotel in Rosebank early on Thursday evening was the man who has been in the news lately for his record breaking achievement, DJ Black Coffee. This event was also a platform to announce that the DJ, producer and philanthropist will also be joining Kaya FM as a presenter from the 01st of November.

Kaya FM station manager, Greg Maloka

Kaya FM station manager Greg Maloka had great things to say about both these talented men. When asked about whether this is a move to attract a younger audience base to the station since house music is generally consumed by the young market, he sharply defended that he doesn’t box music. Greg even uttered that he had told Louie to do something about Curtis Mayfield‘s Trippin‘ after listening and being moved by it the previous day.

MC, Bob Mabena

A few questions were directed to all three members of the panel. Black Coffee touched briefly on his European tour that starts in mid-November. He also mentioned that he would like to take other artists from the country to tour with him, but time and logistics do not allow him at the moment. Speaking of his We Are One tune that features legendary Hugh Masekela, which he dubbed as “the reflection of our country”; he shared his amazing idea of collecting footage from his tour together with all his other experiences throughout the world for the video shot the previous week. This includes the footage from this experience with Louie and Anena for the short time they have spent on this occasion.

Anena Vega

Black Coffee also highlighted that the music he’ll be playing on his new radio show will be the music that inspires him. He added, “I’ll play the music that I wanted to share with the world, but I couldn’t put on my albums.” It should be interesting to see how deep in his musical crates he digs to deliver on this promise.

Louie Vega

Anane was also eager to speak about the mix she did for Kaya FM over the past weekend. She was even more excited to talk about her involvement with the Elements Of Life projects. Her charm and beauty created a balance in a panel filled with all male, an attribute she seems to have mastered being in a male-dominated industry. The understanding and remaining true to one’s roots rated amongst the most import things with the music she shares with the world.

Greg, Culoe, Anane, Louie, Black Coffee & Bob Mabena

Louie was just as elated to be part of the Kaya FM family, stating how super a platform it is to launch his radio career. When asked about collaborating with Black Coffee, he said it’s something that is definitely on the cards. The prolific DJ praised David Guetta for his collaborations with the likes of Kelly Rowland and Akon, to put dance music out there. What caught my ear in a big ear from him though was him saying that the new Elements Of Life project will be released next year and it will be featuring amongst others the likes of Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle and even Erykah Badu.

RJ paying attention.

It was great seeing Black Coffee‘s long-time collaborator Culoe de Song, as well as singing maestro RJ Benjamin soaking in the information that was shared between the panel and the media that was present. More so for RJ Benjamin who I spotted even taking notes as the information flew around the room.

Culoe, Louie & Black Coffee

The press conference was certainly an eye-opening experience highlighting how big house music is in this country, undeniably the biggest in the world. When MC for the event Bob Mabena closed the Q&A session, he announced that Louie was to bless us with what he best known for. Just as we were eating and socialising, the music began to let us know that Louie was on the turntables. I only enjoyed a few songs he mixed because I was rushing to another event. Louie Vega was billed to do his thing the following Friday at a Kaya FM-organised gig, which I believe was insane.

Louie Vega spinning.

I’m certainly looking forward to the changes Kaya FM is bringing to the fore. I have a feeling Black Coffee will be playing a lot of the music I’m more passionate about. Come Novemebr 01, I’ll be tuning in.

Louie Vega doing his thing.

Late last month I was invited to the launch event for Kenyan-born Afrosoul singer Liz Ogumbo‘s debut album aptly titled KenSoul. The very first thing that caught my eye was the setup and decor at the venue, which actually made me forget about the difficulty I went through trying to find the place.

Liz with her singers and dancers

After sharing pleasantries with Gallo Record‘s Duncan, RJ Benjamin and Nonkululeko Godana (part of Liz‘s marketing team), I noticed the assorted finger snacks which I was told consisted of different delicacies from all over Africa. My evening was getting interesting by the minute.

Liz performing

While waiting for Liz to take to the stage to show us what she could do, I mingled with different people that had come to show their support. Before long, Liz‘s manager made an announcement that the soulstress was about to showcase her talent to the invited guests.

Liz introducing one of her songs

After a brief introduction about her history, the first thing I noticed when she waltzed in was how tall Liz is. I even made a comment on Twitter about how tremendously long her legs are. She performed a few songs from her album but the one that stuck out the most was a number titled Big Ass In A Blue Jeans. Perhaps because of the title. Or it could have been its funky nature. It doesn’t matter really, it was still a catchy and fun tune. Her dancers added high but understated energy to the performance.

Dancers getting down

When I made another comment on Twitter that I place Liz amongst the likes of Algebra, YahZarah and Nigeria‘s Asa, I received some differing views from one of my followers. This is what I love about music though, or life for that matter, we will never share the same sentiments. I loved her sound, loved the stories she told, so whether one feels she’s a gimmick doesn’t change how I felt about her and her refreshing soul music.

Liz performing Big Ass In A Blue Jeans

After her performance, Gallo Record‘s Neil made a sppech about how excited they are to work with the lanky former model. The night ended with us getting goodie bags that consisted of a Mi-Fone (who were sponsors for the evening) cellphone, a copy of KenSoul and a nicely pressed Kanga; a nice finishing touch to the experience. Liz Ogumbo‘s album is out music shops now. Give it a listen, I’m certain you’ll fall in love with numerous songs. well, if you appreciate real music anyway.

Philanthropist and medical doctor from Tumelo Home

The first leg of the launch was the gala dinner that took place at the Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank on Thursday evening. We were told to be there by 5pm to attend the press conference before the dinner, but for some reason things were delayed resulting in the press conference being cancelled. I did however get a few minutes to briefly chat with the man of the moment, Nathi Maphumulo, affectionately known as DJ Black Coffee.

MC Vusi Thembekwayo

DJ Black Coffee opened up about why he decided to launch this foundation. He relayed a story of how his left arm became disabled on the eve of Nelson Mandela‘s release from prison. The tall, dark and down-to-earth man shared, “Being successful with the disability, it made me think of how I can encourage other people in the same situation as me to get to where I am”. He spoke passionately about how he wants to give back.

Singer Zonke performing

The well-traveled and world renowned DJ and producer also shared his experience at Tumelo Home, a home for disabled that houses and takes care of tens of kids and adults with different physical and mental challenges. It was written all over his face and audible from his voice how touched he was by what he witnessed during his visit. DJ Black Coffee emphasised that it’s not just about money that he wishes to raise for his charity, but also any pledges ranging from clothes to diapers, and even time to go to the homes he will earmark and help out. He said with authority in his voice, “Being there with the children helps a lot. Especially those that are not fully disabled”.

Nathi delivering his moving speech

After much more waiting, we were eventually escorted to the conference room where the proceedings would take place. The decor and set up was classy and elegant. So were the hordes of invited guests that had come to support this amazing cause. The compeer for the night was a motivational speaker Vusi Thembekwayo (apparently he’s won a competition as the best public speaker in South Africa, or was that one of the best in the world?), who kept us in stitches and entertained us throughout the night.

Bonang chatting with Mokgadi

More entertainment came in the hands, or in this case voice, of Zonke who serenaded us with her sweet yet powerful voice, as we enjoyed the 3-course meal. She is such a rare talent. I was sitting at the same table with Bonang Matheba and we were fixed on our seats in amazement at what she can do with those pipes of hers. It seemed the sentiment was shared by the whole room, judging by the applause she received after she was done.

Manchester City autographed jersey handed over to winner of bid

The most exciting and important element of the night followed after DJ Black Coffee‘s speech where he again shared the horrifying experience of how he lost use of his left arm, this time sharing with the whole room. This was the auction where a donated painting, as well as an original autographed Manchester City jersey, were put through bidding wars by Vusi.

The man who gave the painting back for re-auction

The auction got so intense that at one stage one apparently rich man who was also sitting at our table announced that he was taking it at R17 000 and gave it back to be re-auctioned. It ended up being actioned for R25 000. That is not all, Vukile Sithole (Sipho Sithole‘s wife) and DJ Oskido bid for the very same item but stopped their bids at R13 000 and R15 000 respectively, which they donated to the foundation. The autographed Manchester City jersey collected a whooping R20 000 from a very young lady.

Painting handed over to winner of bid

The night set out a high energy and charity tone for the rest of the launch weekend. DJ Black Coffee took pictures with some of the winners and some guests before heading to Maponya Mall where he was to begin the second part of the event. From midnight that day, he was going to be playing (DJ’ying) for 60 hours. Although there is a DJ who holds the record for playing for 100 hours, DJ Black Coffee set his own for playing for 60 hours with one hand. He is in the Guinness World Book Records for this remarkable feat as we speak.

Lebo Motswenyane and guest

On Friday afternoon I went to Maponya Mall to show some love and support. It was humbling and inspiring that there were 100′s of people who had come to do the same. DJ Black Coffee would play for 4 hours and get 20 minutes to rest or even go for 8 straight hours to double the rest time throughout the whole set. During the breaks different entertainers (DJ’s and artists) would take over to make the crowd dance and cheer. It was great to see Demor Skhosana, one-part of the trio Shana (who DJ Black Coffee belongs ), constantly there. Amongst others that I saw coming through on Friday as well as on Saturday when I returned included house songstress Bucie, Brown Dash, Liquid Deep, singer Aya and DJ Black Coffee‘s pregnant fiance Mbali Mlotshwa (who was instrumental in the whole event from the very beginning).

Culoe de Song and guest

DJ Black Coffee endured so much in the name of humanity and kindness, and needs to be applauded for engaging in such an important cause. His groundbreaking achievement is inspirational to many of us in the country and around the world. This was clear from the messages of support from fans throughout the world via the live stream that was set up for the 4 days. Well done and congratulations to you Nathi. You have made our country and your fans proud with your sincere and charitable gesture. More than anything, thank you for inspiring and touching us with your kindness and talent.
