This past September I attended the rehearsals for Mzansi Love Soul festival, and subsequently the Friday show. You may remember my write up about it where I mentioned that one of the artists on the line up, Brian Temba, let me listen to (and watch) his fresh and new single (video) off his yet untitled upcoming album. Guess what?

Today is Brian Temba‘s birthday. And as a treat to his fans, he has decided to share the video for the song This Is My Time with them. I’ve said my piece about the song already HERE, now it’s your chance to listen and watch, then tell us what you think of it.

And it doesn’t end there. A few weeks ago, Brian Temba sent me two more tracks from his upcoming sophomore album. On his special day, we have decided to share them with you, for a limited period. The first track is called I’ll Wait and the second one, Zanele. Take a listen below and share your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom. NB! These tracks will only be available during his birthday weekend.

Brian Temba – I’ll Wait (Update: Audio has been removed)

As I mentioned to Brian after I listened to the music, I love this track. There are many things I like about it. Firstly, I appreciate that he toned down his vocals, which works perfectly for a more uptempo tune. Secondly, I totally dig the vocal arrangements. Even the background vocals are on point. The only let down are the horns featured on the production. I wish they were more sharp so that they stand out.

Brian Temba – Zanele (Update: Audio has been removed)

Now this, this right here, is a beautiful song. From the live instrumentation to the lyrics, to the vocal delivery. I can picture Brian singing it with a live band at a jazz festival. I can also picture Zanele‘s (the ladies) screaming their lungs out as he performs it. LOL. But seriously, I love the mellow, jazzy feel to it. A Zulu ballad has never sounded so wonderful.

And oh, happy birthday Brian. May the Lord grant you many, many more years so that you continue to bless us with your soul and inspiring words. May you have an effulgent one! Have a blast!

RELEASE DATE: 09 December 2011

CAST: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks

DIRECTOR: Nicolas Winding Refn

CLASSIFICATION: L N V

DURATION: 101 minutes

Ryan Gosling in the beast he drives in Drive.

Drive centres around the character of Driver (played by Ryan Gosling), who is a driver stuntman for action movies. However, when the sun goes down, Driver changes the gear to become a getaway driver for heists and criminal activities of that nature.

Having grown under his wing, and representing him on both his day time and night time activities, Shannon (played by Bryan Cranston) is the only person the lone Driver trusts. With ambitions of making Driver a fixture on the car racing professional circuit, Shannon enlists financial backing of film producer-turned-crime boss Bernie (played by Kaden Leos).

The plans they have take a left turn when Driver meets Irene (portrayed by Carey Mulligan), a new neighbour in his apartment. When Driver sees Irene again, he strikes a potentially dangerous relationship with the waitress and her young son. Before the relationship develops any further, Irene‘s husband, Standard (played by Oscar Isaac) is released early from prison for good behaviour.

Standard‘s demons follow him, leading to an encounter, in the presence of his son, that leave with bloody. When Driver witnesses the beaten up Standard, he offers to help him sort his issues out, by using his driving expertise.

The pair, now joined by a representative of those that want Standard to pay his debt, are unaware that they are about to be back stabbed. In turn, this leads to Standard‘s death, and a series of cat-and-mouse experiences for Driver.

In the background, the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together to reveal that the same people who want to help Driver out, may be the very same people that want him dead.

What I enjoyed the most about Drive was the witty and humorous dialogue. The car chase scenes were also a marvel to watch. These fair amongst the best for the ‘need for speed’ junkies. The graphic nature of the killings reminded me of Quentin Tarantino‘s style, even though they were not as ‘gratuitous or as campy as Tarantino’s films’, as fashion designer Thula Sindi responded on Twitter when I made the Tarantino comparison.

And of course, I always pay attention to the performances. Ryan Gosling‘s performances was fairly good. It was the other members of the cast who impressed me the most, including Carey Mulligan who is yet to disappoint me; the best I’ve ever seen her being in the Oscar-nominated An Education.

Although Drive is not exactly one of the best cinema experiences, it places its mark among the best in the ‘need for speed’ genre, just because of those brilliant car chases. It opens at Nu Metro cinemas around the country on Friday, 09 December 2011.

TITLE: Warrior
RELEASE DATE: 07 October 2011
CAST: Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte, Tess Conlon, Frank Grillo, Paddy Conlon, Denzel Whitaker, Bryan Callen, Kevin Dunn, Maxmiliano Hernandez
DIRECTOR: Gavin O’Connor
CLASSIFICATION: 13 LV
DURATION: 141 minutes

There are very few sport films that are able to not only capture your attention, but enthrall you from beginning to the end. Warrior is one of those films.

Tommy Conlon (played by Tom Hardy) is a temperamental ex-marine who hasn’t been home in the past fourteen years. He returns to ask his former alcoholic father (played by Nick Nolte) to train him for the biggest no-holds-barred winner-takes-all mixed martial arts event in the country.

Brendan (played by Joel Edgerton) is his brother, a more calmer soul than his younger sibling. However, Brendan has his own flaws too. He is on a verge of losing his house because his teaching job doesn’t cover all his expenses. Brendan convinces his rather doubtful wife (played by Tess Conlon) to let him participate in the very same competition.

What are the chances that the two brothers can actually face each other at the final leg of the world-renowned Sparta competition? Before such a possibility is even explored, we are taken through their parallel lives, as well as the point where they are reunited. the relationships between their father is also delved into.

Warrior is a riveting and inspirational story about family, brotherhood, loyalty, triumph, and responsibility. The way this moving and inspiring tale is told is delicate, yet striking. Each and every scenario is impeccably crafted.

The performances are equally impressive. Tom Hardy has continued to impress me with each and every film he has done. On Warrior, he captures the spirit of a man feeling betrayed, but on his way to redemption and forgiveness, with every slithering move and word uttered from his mouth.

His co-star, Joel Edgerton, is also exceptional in portraying his character. So are veteran Nick Nolte and Tess Conlon. More so Nolte, as he dips between different nuances with such ease and flair. It was great to see young stars like Denzel Whitaker make moves, however small they may be, in films of this calibre.

Warrior is an absolutely fantastic film. It is wholesome in its presentation, with elements including action, drama, humour, and inspiration. The film will be released at Nu Metro cinemas nationwide this coming Friday, 07 October 2011. Be sure not to miss it.

The second annual street culture festival, STR.CRD, took place this past Saturday at Johannesburg‘s Maboneng Precinct. For the first time in Jozi, after its successful debut run in the Mother City last year, Joburgers got a taste of blend of activities synonymous with street culture.

From skateboarders to beat-boxers, from b-boy’s to hip hop artists, from graffiti artists to street balling, it was all a ball of fun as masses congregated to witness one of the most unique events I’ve ever attended. The Arts on Main streets were closed off, with different activities taking place around the venue. Buildings and other warehouses were specifically set up and decorated with each of the exhibitors in mind.

Although it was kinda crazy, I did manage to visit as many exhibitors as possible; from Puma to New Balance; from Bench to Nike; and even Butan. Speaking of Nike, I signed up to go into the highly secure booth where a pair of only 1500 Nike‘s produced around the world, that are being auctioned for over $1 million to benefit Michael J Fox‘s charity (to find cure for Parkinson‘s disease), were safely guarded in a glass box. Before seeing these Nike shoes, we were shown a commercial demonstrating how powerful they are, and how they came about.

While enjoying all the activities STR.CRD had to offer, I ran into a few familiar faces. Here are some of them.

Siya Ngwekazi was the MC at the music and dance stage. This get up, I’m not so sure. Doesn’t he look like a dictator from some African country? But it’s so him. He’s got his own brand of style that works for him. Most of the time.

Another stylish boy is Khaya, a.k.a. Bhubesi. How cool is that ensemble? Even the hair and accessories. When I saw him he told me he had just finished performing. Unfortunately I missed his performance.

Spotted Ricky Rik enjoying what the b-boys were doing on stage. I met him for the first time at the Durban July. He’s a cool dude.

Actor Thapelo Mokoena was at the same spot. Seems that’s the stage or activity that attracted more people. I guess you can never go wrong with music and dance.

Remember this guy? If I’m not mistaken, it’s the same guy who played Archie‘s twin son on Generations way back. His name is Tafadzwa something. He does look a bit different.

Are these guys twins? I had to do a double take. I think one of them presented that Masters Of Dance show on Vuzu. They were at the stand where graffiti artists were customising sneakers for the patrons who had bought some. Dude who customised my New Balance shoe at the Russian Bear Vodka party was part of it.

Comedian Loyiso Gola was mingling with friends just outside the Puma bus stand.

Integrated creative and production resource leader FroLab was there as part of the programme. He also enjoyed some of the other activities, including shopping.

When I was leaving, Channel O and Vuzu‘s Dineo was arriving. On top of the great talent she possesses, she’s such a nice girl.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to enjoy the STR.CRD experience to its entirety because I had to leave rather early. I feel salty that I didn’t even get to see Ill Skillz or Bhubesi perform. There was a VIP party at the rooftop of PopArt, but when it didn’t start as scheduled, I bounced. I dashed out to see more stalls that were packed with clothing and kicks before I left the venue.

Well done and congratulations to Hardy McQueen and his team for planning and carrying out such a successful event. I can’t wait to see who they bring through for next year’s edition. And hopefully, I’ll get to attend from start to end. I wonder which city will play host next year….*goes away to chat with Hardy to find out.*

I don’t usually post music videos here but after my interactions with Rob Murat and viewing his new video for the song titled “Know…“, I just had to.

Just a bit about the young man. I met Rob Murat on Twitter almost two years ago. The New York native is an Ivy League graduate. I’ve listened to his music since our meeting and fell in love with his soulful sound and distinctive voice. Having recorded music and performed sold out shows since his introduction into the industry, Rob is also a budding actor who has appeared in TV commercials and TV series. Moreover, he is a notable humanitarian whose efforts for the devastating Haiti disasters have been well documented.

Now, the video for his song “Know…” came out a few weeks ago. He sent me the link, but being from “Africa“, the platform it was posted on didn’t allow me access. Rob promised to load the video on YouTube and let me know as soon as he had done so. I gather he is also a man of his word as he has just sent me the link to the video.

I’ve watched the video and totally love it. The song alone is beautifully constructed, from the wholesome sound to the impeccably written lyrics; from its infectious melody to the exceptionally delivered vocals. The concept of the video is dope, the images and their motion nothing short of top notch. Please check it out below and let me know what you think.

For more information Rob Murat and his work, go to robmurat.com or follow him on Twitter.

After an eventful day yesterday, I braced myself to eventually watch Dreamgirls. I had planned on going to the Playboy Playmate Party afterwards, but felt too tired to attend.

Earlier today, the publicists for Playboy SA offered to send me the photos for the new Playmate that was revealed last night at the party. I responded saying I’d love to have the photos, as long as the Playmate is a black girl. To my surprise and joy, the response said it is a black woman.

Introducing to you the May 2011 Playboy Covergirl and Playmate, Tshego Seakgoe!

All I can say is OOH LA LA!

Tshego is a 21-year old who was born in Soweto. She is taking a break from her International Studies and Journalism degree studies at Monash University to fulfill her modelling dreams. She is no stranger to the limelight though as she has appeared on KTV and YOTV as a youngster. A particular highlight for her was having sung for Nelson Mandela on his 80th birthday, according to the press release.

As for her future, she says she’s keeping an open mind about what lies ahead. “I don’t know what the future will bring,” she quips.

After this cover, I may be a fan a Playboy SA already. I just hope they maintain the balance between vanilla and chocolate.

Whenever I’ve seen Liam Neesen‘s name attached to a film, a certain kind of excitement bolts through my body. This is caused by the fact that I’ve immensely enjoyed all the films I’ve seen him in. When I saw him in Taken a few years ago I was bowled over. His performances are always raw and real. Upon seeing his name on the lineup for Unknown, I felt that longing to watch him transform himself into yet another character.

Diane Kruger and Liam Neesen

A couple has just arrived in Berlin. The man forgets his briefcase with all his travelling documents on the trolley as they are whisked away by a taxi. Upon arriving at the hotel, he realises what he’s left behind and catches a taxi back to the airport to look for his belongings. On the way, a freak accident takes place. This is when the action begins. Although he has not sustained any serious injuries, he is a different man. His wife doesn’t recognise him and his identity has been stolen by another man. It’s not long before he realises that there are bigger powers at play with this mystery. He rushes against time, the disbelieving authorities and a bevy of assassins ordered to kill him, to prove his identity. Moreover, he sets on a quest, assisted by the driver that was driving him when the accident took place, to uncover the truth.

Unknown is riveting and thrilling, from the twist and turns to the car chases, fight sequences and other stunts. The suspense keeps you on the edge of the sit, a sure sign for a highly entertaining experience. The acting is just as impressive. Neesen is superb, showing his flair for this genre. Equally phenomenal were the likes of Diane Kruger and Frank Langella. I also enjoyed the little injections of understated comedy.

January Jones as Elizabeth Harris and Liam Neesen as Dr. Martin Harris

Another fascinating thing I found in the film was a character called Biko. The pronounciation that he was African, although a specific country not revealed, could have some reference to the South African liberation icon Steve Biko. I just wish we could have seen more of the character on screen.

If you are an espionage and spycraft fan, you are totally going to love Unknown. It is such an unassuming treat of a film. It opens this coming Friday, 08 April 2011, at Nu Metro cinemas countrywide.

It’s still a few months away, but the first headliner for the Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz Festival taking place in August has been announced. It’s none other than trumpeter, composer, bandleader, music educator, and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Below is what the press release says about Wynton‘s appearance at the renowned annual jazz festival.

Jazz great Wynton Marsalis – winner of nine Grammy Awards® and the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music – is the headline act at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz which runs in Johannesburg from August 25 to 27.

Marsalis will perform at Emperor’s Palace on Thursday August 25 and Saturday August 27 on the Dinaledi stage in Newtown.

The legendary trumpeter whose creativity has been celebrated throughout the world is arguably the biggest jazz artist to come to South Africa.

Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He is the world’s first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop and modern jazz.

By creating and performing an expansive range of new music for quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras, tap dance to ballet, Wynton has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers.

Marsalis is currently the Artistic Director of Jazz at New York’s famous Lincoln Center.

Festival promoter, Peter Tladi of T-Musicman says: “Wynton’s visit is going to shake up the local jazz scene. Three of the Marsalis brothers – Branford, Delfeayo and Jason – have already performed at Standard Bank Joy of Jazz but this is the big one. It is a real coup for the festival.”

Commented Mandie van der Spuy, Head of Art & Jazz Sponsorships Standard Bank: “Standard Bank prides itself on giving jazz lovers a weekend to remember. Our continued support for Joy of Jazz has seen this prominent social music fixture grow in stature each year. We are delighted to help celebrate a rich and warm blend of African and international jazz in the heart of Johannesburg, bringing jazz lovers together in a truly united and global celebration of jazz and its heritage.”

Tladi added: “Having Wynton Marsalis headline the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will once again put Jozi on the international jazz map. We will be releasing the names of other exciting artists closer to the festival which we predict will be a sell-out like last year.”

The 2011 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is produced by T-Musicman and presented by Standard Bank.

Ticket sales for the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will be available from Computicket in mid-June.

I’m looking forward to more artists to be announced over the next few months.

In the beginning of last year I (Khetha Mkhize) was selected as one of the judges for the Naledi Theatre Awards. I was over the moon for being bestowed with this responsibility and exercise. As I watched theatre productions and got to experience the degree of the work that goes into them, I discovered new found respect and adulation for this craft. That led my taking all the parties involved with theatre more seriously. It is truly humbling and a blessing to be a part of such an amazing and humungus industry.

James Borthwick & Angela Killian on Pieter Toerien's Evita

Towards the end of last year we were tasked with the most difficult part of the judging experience. It was time to select the productions and talent that we thought went beyond the call of the craft to offer the best entertainment and inspiration. The process of nominating and subsequently submitting our finalist proved a challenging but extremely eye-opening and enjoyable experience.

Just as the award season is dying down, the time has come for the winners in all the categories to be announced at the classy and refined ceremony. The 8th Annual Naledi Theatre Awards takes place on Monday, March 7th, at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City.

In the process of paying tribute to the best on stage in 2010, the Naledi organisers are piling a heap of entertainment onto The Lyric Theatre’s stage, to keep the audience enthralled throughout the night’s procedures. We are talking here about funny man Nik Rabinowitz who will be the evening’s MC. Theatre doyennes Dr John Kani and Dawn Lindberg will b joining him to complement him with their poise and style.

Performing for the night is Grammy Award winners Soweto Gospel Choir, The Bala Brothers, World Champion exhibition dancers Craig and Natalie, and the powerful PJ Powers. Some of the presenters include Robert Whitehead, Sello Maake ka Ncube, Fiona Ramsay, Nat Ramabulane, Princess Zinzi-Mhlongo, Kgomotso Matsunyane, and Sindi Mabe. They will also be joined by local celebs and business couple Khensani and Zam Nkosi, as well as Loyiso Bala of The Bala Brothers.

The great thing about this all is that the gates will not be closed for the general public. Those who would like to rub shoulders with the glitterati of the South African theatre world and enjoy a high-octane show in the deal, will be pleased to know that – for the first time this year – a reserved number of seats are being made available to the public. Booking is already open at Computicket on a first-come, first-served basis.

The details of the event are as follows:

WHERE: The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino
WHEN: Monday, March 7th at 7.30pm
SEATS: R200
(includes welcome glass of wine, cocktail party & ceremony)

Be sure not to miss out on this amazing experience. I attended last year’s ceremony and was impressed by the refreshing nature of the event. For more info, swing by the Naledi website at www.naleditheatreawards.org.za

The award season has created such a buzz for this film that I couldn’t wait to watch it. Even friends who got a chance to watch it towards the end of last year were singing praises about it, particularly that of its star Natalie Portman. Although a former child star, it wasn’t until 2004 that I took more interest in her. Subsequently, I became a fan of hers after seeing her on Garden State. She continued to impress me on Closer alongside Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Jude Law. Portman didn’t stop there as she made a name for herself as a versatile actor with unimaginable range in her next numerous films, including V For Vendetta. It was for these reasons that I anticipated to watch this film so much.

Black Swan is a psychological thriller tracing the life of a conflicted ballerina whose dream is to play the queen in the upcoming Swan Lake production. Portman plays Nina, a ballet dancer who has her sights set on the coveted leading role of this production. For her to be recognised for this role she has to be able to equally play both the White and Black Swans with conviction and ease. The director openly praises her for her sterling performance as the White Swan. On the other hand, she is struggling to pull off the other much more sensual and darker side of her role. How far will she go to make both the parts on par with each other?

Natalie Portman‘s transformation into the Black Swan is one filled with intensity. This facet of the story is laced with such thrill, captivating the audience to the core. She is absolutely brilliant in the role of Nina. Her transition from this weak, sweet girl into a dangerous, sexual being is remarkable. The audience is kept on the edges of their seats from start to finish with suspense and curiosity. She has already bagged two of the biggest awards so far, the Golden Globe and the SAG, from the numerous awards she and the film has won along the way. It’s unmistakable that she is going to walk away with the biggest of them all come the Oscars on February 27th.

The supporting cast is just as immensely enjoyable to watch in this amazing piece of work from director Darren Aronofsky. Everything is top notch, from the story to the directing, from the acting to the visualisation.

Black Swan opens at Nu Metro cinemas on Friday, 04 February 2011. Be sure to check it out. It’s also one of the Best Picture contenders at the Oscars at the end of the month.
