Again, like we did last year, the selection was derived from music of different genres, and from the albums that we have a physical copy of, therefore were able to listen to throughout the year. I know there are some really great albums that came out this year that we didn’t get to listen to; we shall mention some of those at the end of this feature.

With that said, we have compiled the Top 20 Albums Of 2011. Here it is:

When MLU released the single Do You Right over 3 years ago, it was a breath of fresh air for South African R&B music. We waited and waited for more from the Umlazi native, who was based in Australia at the time. That was until late last year when I got my hands on his official debut offering Music Lovan Unity (for Music, Love, And Unity. Notice the play on his name). I could have included the album in last year’s Top 20, but the album was to be released officially early this year.

Music Lovan Unity undoubtedly deserves the top spot for many reasons. Firstly, MLU’s voice is incomparable. His vocal range rivals the best in the R&B, soul and jazz music genres. There are many moments where his rich and powerful voice is allowed to shine, like in the piano-impaled So Beautiful; the funky, yet soulful In Love, complete with delicate horns; and Different Melody, sung in accappella. Other stand out tracks includes Stay Alive, Do You Right, Crazy Love, Could This Be, and United. The production of the music is top notch and wholesome, thanks to powerhouse producers like Alexis Faku and RJ Benjamin. Equally impressive is the song writing for Music Lovan Unity. And the marrying of his voice with music is palpable.

Moreover, when was the last time you listened to a 19-track album, from the beginning to the end, without skipping any song? Covering different styles and sounds also works in his favour, displaying his versatility as an artist and vocalist. This is definitely the best album of 2011 for me.

When Pebbles named her album, it’s as if she knew exactly how it would sound. Perhaps that’s an exact thought that crossed her mind after listening to the completed body of work. And she couldn’t have described it any better.

I loved Phenomenal so much, I reviewed it for 7 (former City Pulse), the supplementary magazine for City Press newspaper. Below is what I had to say about it.

Singer Pebbles offers her sophomore album simply titled Phenomenal. Oozing with scintillating soul, it also boasts an array of double-clutching rhythms.

With the first track’s bass and horns intro, the listener is set in the mood for a musical journey pregnant with infectious melodies.

Pebbles has roped in powerhouse producers like RJ Benjamin, Amu and Tebogo Moloto. She also sits on the production chair on 3 of the 12 tracks. Amusingly, all the 3 tracks possess jazz elements, from the bass guitar to the horns and grand piano; delivered with delicate sensibility to the genus. Even the way her striking, yet well-controlled voice soars and swoops over the smooth arrangements, is reminiscent of the distinguished works of Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and Gloria Bosman. The vocal features are equally impressive, employing the services of singer Nothende and rapper Zubz on the title track.

Phenomenal is the accurate title for this album. The top notch production, coupled with strong vocals makes it a gem.

Looking at the above review, I’m sure many would agree that it deserves the second position on my Top 20 Albums Of 2011.

Third on the chart is Rahsaan Patterson’s Bluephoria. Now, I’ve had access to the music contained herein since late last year. A friend of mine who works for Sheer Music made a copy from the master for me so I could listen, thereafter help him with promoting the album in South Africa.

Bluephoria is Patterson’s 6th studio album, a follow up to his 2008 Christmas offering The Ultimate Gift. Although I liked the opening track, upon my first listen, it was the third track titled Crazy (Baby) that caught my attention. The crazy thing about this song is that nobody at Sheer knew whose female voice was featured on this up-tempo groove. I figured out that the voice belongs to Faith Evans. However, towards the end of the song, I could hear that there was a different voice. And this one was Shanice Wilson’s. I then remembered chatting to Rahsaan at the Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz; and him telling me about the guests on his then untitled upcoming album. And he did mention these two ladies. But I had no idea that they would be featured on the same track.

Anyway, Bluephoria contains 13 tracks of musical bliss. My absolute favourite songs are Miss You and Goodbye. When I listened to these two tracks, they told a continuous story that resonated with me on an abyssal level. That’s probably why they follow each other on the track listing. Whenever I listen to them, especially Goodbye, I can’t help but think of a very close late blood brother of mine whom I didn’t get to say goodbye to when he left this earth in August of 2000. The kind of emotions the song evokes on me are heartfelt and profound.

Other songs that I can listen to repeatedly for hours include Mountain Top, a gospel-tinged, melodious tune that features the legendary Andrea Crouch and his singers; the potent Insomnia; and an ode to the maker of all things, God. Actually, God was not included when the master was copied for me. When I listened to the final product, just before it went out to the music stores, I instantaneously fell in love with it. Even though I feel it could have still worked without the tiny bit of auto tune programming in the bridge, it didn’t harm the song.

Rahsaan’s extensive understanding of his craft is laudable in these times. The fact that he not only wrote (and co-wrote) and produced (and also co-produced) all the material on Bluephoria, but also played the synth bass, keyboards and did the drum programming, is certainly an admirable and meritorious one.

Although this is not new material, Bab’ Caiphus Semenya deserves all the accolades for packaging some of the best material he has ever done in this live CD from a live show he did at Carnival City last year.

The 2-disc album, which is also available on DVD, features staple Caiphus Semenya classics like Play With Fire, Nomalanga, Ndiphendule, Ziph’ Inkomo, Matswale and Angelina. In addition to the impeccable manner in which the band plays and the exceptional vocals from Semenya and singers, I thoroughly enjoyed the stories accompanying some of the songs. Like the romantic story of how the song Nomali (which is Mam’ Letta Mbulu’s other name, by the way) was conceived; as well as how his relationship with, Victor Ndlazilwana, the composer of Umfana Ijongwana (which features Thandiswa Mazwai), came about.

I know Semenya’s vast body of work extends beyond the boundaries, including his time with Quincy Jones, but this project should give one an idea of his fecund career. And even better is the fact that it is a live presentation of his iconic and ground breaking productions. It takes the fourth spot on our Top 20 Albums Of 2011.

As far as Vusi Khumalo is concerned, he’s a legend in his own right. Even though I don’t remember owning an album of his prior to Reasons For Seasons, I’m very familiar with his music through listening to the radio and from other projects he has done with other musicians.

Reasons For Seasons also consists of two discs. The first set contains a sound with worldly, modern appeal, because of the guest features and the dynamic Afro soul and pop elements, what with artists like Lebo Mashile, Xolile Dlamini, Steven Molakeng, and rapper Tala, making appearances. The latter however, speaks more to Khumalo’s signature sound, with a more traditional jazz feel.

Khumalo has roped in the best instrumentalists to give this album the lustrous sound it possesses. Amongst them are the likes of percussionist Tlale Makhene, Eric Pilane and Kunle Ayo on guitar, Fana Zulu and Jimmy Mngwadi on bass, and Victor Masondo on upright bass. Amongst the singers blessing these audio paintings with vocals are Khanyo Maphumulo, Mimi Mthenjwa, and Nduduzo Makhathini; who are all famed in their session work for some of the biggest jazz names in the country.

Reasons For Seasons in one of the best jazz albums to come out this year. Khumalo’s compositions and arrangements are fresh and solid. It’s rare for a drummer to release a full body of work, let alone an outstanding piece like Reasons For Seasons.

Making it to 6th position is Jill Scott with her latest attempt, Light Of The Sun. With this album, she stayed true to her objective to take it back to her roots. Jill Scott pairs up with Lee Hutson Jr, aka J.R. Hutson, to remind us why we fell in love with the soulful lady from Philly.

The opening track, a Dre and Vidal production, is reminiscent of how she delivered A Long Walk from her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1. As for the hit So In Love, a duet featuring Anthony Hamilton, it is even more enjoyable towards the end when the live drums are broken down, with Jill and Anthony playing out with their voices. There are so many outstanding songs to mention, but there are a few that stood out more than others. For example, the legendary Doug E. Fresh doing his magic on All Cried Out Redux; Le Boom Vent Suit where Jill switches things up (or down in this instance) in a 2-part tune, just like she did in I Keep/I’m Still Here from her album Human. Amongst the highlights are the two Warryn Campbell-written songs, the playful Quick, and frank and raunchy Until Then (I Imagine); the retrospective, piano-laced Hear My Call (strings arranged and conducted by Larry Gold) where Jill earnestly prays; as well as the album closer Rolling Hills.

Jill Scott and J.R. Hutson have done a sterling job as executive producers and creatively producing a balanced body of work. Hutson lends more of his talents and skills by playing keyboards on a number of tracks, and in some, all the instruments. The only let-down comes from two tracks that feature rappers. The first one, the Eve-assisted Shame (also featuring The A Group), and the other, So Gone (What My Mind Says), containing a rap verse from Paul Wall. I don’t really have a huge issue with Shame, it’s only that I wish they featured that rap battle showdown dome by Black Thought (of The Roots), Yameen Allworld, and Meek Skills, they featured in the video on the album version. As for the latter, I’m not too sure if Paul Wall was the right fit for this song.

Overall, Light Of The Sun is a brilliant album that stamps the longevity of what is dubbed neo-soul music.

The band that has become renowned for creating completely original music is back with their 7th studio album, aptly titled 7. And what a coincidence that Mint Condition makes it to number 7 of our Top 20 Albums Of 2011.

Stokley Williams and his boys stay true to their sound by infusing soul, R&B and rock elements into the latest project. Songs like Caught My Eye, Walk On and Can’t Get Away appeal to the mainstream, quiet storm radio formula, whereas I Want It and Mind Slicker are more risky in their tone but effective in their presentation. Not shy to veer away from the mould, Mint Condition show their flexibility in a more jazzy number that features no vocals, titled Bossalude.

The first time I listened to the title track, as soon as the thumping beat started, I thought to myself, “this would sound so dope with a rap verse”. Low and behold, a voice starts rapping. The flow is immaculate, the lyrics poignant, and the blend of the voice to the music well-synchronized.

My absolute favourite song from 7 has to be Unsung. The haunting vocals by Stokley and a lady called Tonia Hughes-Kendrick make this an instant classic. The stirring nature in which it is delivered enhances its wholesomeness. Another stand out track is Not My Daddy, the 2012 Grammy-nominated tune featuring and co-written by Kelly Price (co-written with Warryn Campbell). Equally appealing is the album closer Twenty Years Later where Stokley dapples a vivid picture of his life doing what he loves.

Mint Condition have, once again, produced a stunner of an album, in 7. It may contain only 11 tracks, but it packs a punch with each one.

The second live album to make the list, and Top 10 at that, is William Sejake’s live album which was recorded at The Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City in the last quarter of last year.

Anyone who knows me and my music would tell you that I love this kind of gospel music, the contemporary type. It is no surprise, therefore, that I immensely enjoyed listening to this album. I may not have been exposed to William Sejake and his music before, but when I listened, I was rather impressed. His voice is totally amazing. It is striking and powerful, yet unassuming in pitch. Even when he sings the hymns, he presents them in his own style and demeanor.

The album features 11 tracks (the 11th track a medley of 2 songs) of simple, unadulterated gospel songs. The messages in the songs are clear. The praise and worship contained herein is masterfully ministered. It is no surprise that he earned himself a nomination at this year’s Crown Gospel Music Awards in the Best Male category. William Sejake’s Live (Volume 1) comes in at number 8.

Last year the house music outfit that made it to the list was Liquideep. This year Mi Casa takes a spot with their self-titled debut album, also in the Top 10. It’s safe to say that the trio consisting of vocalist J-Something, trumpeter Mo-T, and producer Dr. Duda, are the breakout artists of the year.

Their first single, These Streets, has been heating up the airwaves, televisions, and club floors since it came out. This song sets the tone for what is presented in the 14-track album. Although songs like Heavenly Sent, My Oh My, Change My Life and Fly Away are some of the best songs from the album, All The Glory speaks to me in a profound way. Have you ever heard someone say, “this song takes me to church”? That’s a precise effect it has on me. And it doesn’t even have anything to do with the coincidental gospel hue lyrics it has.

This album is packed with all the right ingredients to make it a hit. And these ingredients are expertly and adequately mashed up. Even more impressive is the fact that Mo-T doesn’t play the trumpet in all the songs, which would have been overkill. And when he does, it’s the right dosage and perfectly timed or arranged. My only gripe was the remake of Sade’s Smooth Operator. I appreciate the different approach, but I believe that a Sade song cannot just be touched by anyone; if at all.

Otherwise, this is a very strong offering from the threesome. And it deserves to take the 9th position on our Top 20 Albums Of 2011.

Closing out our Top 10 in the first part of our Top 20 Albums Of 2011 is another jazz album, this time from the prolific saxophonist Boney James. The award winning sax player makes Contact album number 13, including his 2 Christmas projects.

Boney James has collaborated with many R&B and soul vocalists throughout his career. Eric Benet, Philip Bailey, Angie Stone, Bilal, Faith Evans and Dave Hollister are just a few. In actual fact, I’ve enjoyed all his collaborations with Dwele. Therefore, looking at the guest list on Contact, particularly R&B singers Mario and former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett, I was a bit skeptical about how the songs would sound. However, when I listened to When I Had The Chance and That Look On Your Face, featuring LeToya and Mario, respectively, my mind was changed. Although not your traditional jazz vocalists, they did a good job. On the other hand, the other half of vocalists, Heather Headley and Donell Jones, brought a sense musical understanding to their respective songs.

The songs without vocals give Boney James a spotlight to showcase what he does best when he plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones. Each of these songs is a gem on its own. Still, I have to pin point Deep Time and Everything Matters as the standouts.

Boney James has produced another sterling project with Contact. He is certainly one of the jazz musicians who remain prominent with his work in the modern or soft (as some may call it) jazz spheres.

That, ladies and gents, is the Part 1 of our Top 20 Albums Of 2011. Once more, this is based on the music we got a chance to extensively listen to this year. The second part of the chart will follow in about a week. Please be on the look out for it. Hope it features some of your favourites. In the meantime, let us know if you like any of the albums above. I had seen Joe perform live in the country twice before. So when I got offered the tickets, it couldn’t hurt to go for the third time. Even better was the fact that I was also offered to give away tickets to some of my YEAHBO fam who continuously support me.

Because I had to hand out the tickets to the winning readers, I couldn’t go inside the venue at exactly 19:00, the scheduled time for the performances. It’s amazing that by the time I eventually got in, which was well after 21:00, Theo Kgosinkwe was still on stage. This is where I learnt that Zonke cancelled at the last minute. Perhaps that’s why there were some delays.

Anyway, Theo gave us a great act, as usual. He performed songs from his two albums, as well as some material released during his days with Mafikizolo. But the best part about his shows is always the dancing. He brought out his dancers and sizzled the crowd.

Joe Thomas started peerforming at 22:20. The first stint lasted just over an hour. During this segment he sang an assortment of his songs from his discography that tallies into a total of 9. The songs on the set list included Where You At (which originally features Papoose on the rap verse), Let’s Stay Home Tonight, Miss My Baby, We Need To Roll, Stutter, Ride (in which he originally collaborates with G-Unit), Worst Case Scenario, Come Get With This, More And More, I Wanna Know, All The Things, Good Girls and Magic.

He then retuned for an encore session. During this time he performed Can’t Get Over You, Dear Joe and Losing. Inbetween the songs, he would throw a few lines from other songs, amongst them I’m In Love, the very first song he recorded that appeared on his debut album Everything. By the time he left the stage, the clock read 22:40.

The highlight of the show for me was when he brought his acoustic guitar on stage to play while singing All That I Am (my all-time favourite Joe song) and No-One Else Comes Close. Another noteworthy moment came when he did a medley of Treat Her Like A Lady and What If A Woman.

The ladies were screaming throughout the show. I don’t know if it was for his greying beard or his sweaty bird chest, or the combination of the two (LOL). Some even fighting their way to touch his hand in front of the stage. It was absolutely rioteous in there. He gave us a sterling performance though. It was a great show, albeit the not so great turn out.

The impressive line up that included the best DJ‘s and musicians the world has to offer, set the spectacularly transformed stadium ablaze with their hot tunes.

Scheduled to last for 12 hours (from 12pm to 12am), the Vodacom Unlimited Festival provided plenty of music to keep the revellers on their feet.

Arriving at the stadium around 2pm, people were trickling in, in numbers. The music could be heard from the outside as I caught up for the next few hours with one of my mentors, Durbantainment‘s Arthur Van Wyk.

When we got inside the magnificent establishment, which was my very first time there, Culoe De Song had just finished his set and Black Motion were doing their thing on the decks. What caught my attention at that moment was the sound of the drums, after which I witnessed someone beating on them on the stage.

Before long, Franck Roger made his way to the turntables. The crowds screamed as the French DJ churned out hit after hit on the decks.

After him was our very own DJ Oskido. Dr Malinga joined him to perform their latest hit. The singer’s dance moves may be overboard, what with pulling the pants up every now and then when he danced, but the fans seemed to utterly enjoy the entertainment. As for Oskido, he is a house music legend and I respect him for his contribution to music in Mzansi in general, but what was up with him saying he had to rush to catch a flight when his fans wanted to take pictures with him? Yet, he was seen thereafter, before an hour was even over, entertaining some Jezabels. Not to mention that he was billed to perform with Black Coffee later on.

Low Deep T serenaded the crowd with his baritone voice. He also didn’t want to be left out in the dance category as he moved to the audience’s delight.

I noticed that Rocco made both men and women scream with each new song he started playing. He was doing magic on the turntables. He seemed to be one of the DJ‘s that was really enjoying himself up there. He was hyping up the crowd. At one point he stopped in the middle of his remix to Liquideep‘s Fairytale, then continued the music again, throwing his hands in the air, much to crowd’s delectation. Rocco was also the only DJ who seemed gleeful to be taking pictures with his fans, even taking one surrounded by them on his phone.

Next on the line up was the trio, Spirit Chasers. The loudest the crowd got was at the end of their performance when they performed their hit These Tears.

Ralf Gum was the last DJ to play before the big show of the day/night. He also span some of his biggest hits, getting the crowds dancing.

And then it was time for the big show. We had been counting down the hours since we arrived at the stadium. The stage was set, the orchestra ready, and everything in place when the man of the moment, Black Coffee, was announced. He sauntered to the stage in a crisp black tuxedo, with a black bow tie and an equally natty white shirt.

First highlight of the night was that very point when he started singing opera, with the orchestra accompanying him. He confidently delivered a few lines before walking to his DJ box where he spent most of the time in.

Vuyo Tyolo was the first lead vocalist, tackling a new Black Coffee tune called Don’t Give Up. His vocals were utterly exquisite, as I’ve come to realise with each performance I’ve seen him do.

Hot on Vuyo‘s heels was Tshepo (not sure what his surname is), singing Never Saw You Coming. He performance was good, but forgettable.

Next on stage was a young man named Jackie (also not sure of his surname). He sang a song called Masquerade. Jackie‘s performance was fairly good.

It wasn’t long before Bucie got the crowd screaming and singing along to Turn Me On. Seductively dancing, she delivered this hit impeccably.

Another Soulistic signee to brace the stage was Tumelo Ruelo. He performed the Black Coffee-produced hit Arise And Shine, from his debut album of the same title. The crowd was also singing along.

One of my all time favourite Black Coffee songs is You Rock My World. With vocals performed by Soulstar, they got the crowd, and even myself, moving. The chemistry between Soulstar‘s vocals and Black Coffee‘s mixing was palpable.

The next song, titled The Chameleon, featured the legendary Black Moses on organ. On top of Moses‘ exceptional skills on the keys, this is where Black Coffee showcased more of his top-notch mixing skills.

The second female vocalist for the night was Thiwe, singing Crazy. Looking past the excessive glycerine smeared all over her legs, she has a banging body. And she’s got a voice to boot too!

Black Coffee then did his magic on two songs that didn’t have any lead vocals. The first did, however, feature background vocals (I think it is called My World). On the second one (it may be titled In The Garden, not too sure), I saw Black Coffee in the spirit, shouting, “Woza Baba“, in the build up to the drum solo section of the song.

The next performance was such a great surprise for everyone. Black Coffee brought the legendary B.O.P (Oskido and Bruce) on stage. I believe the track they did is another new Black Coffee track that is sure to heat up airwaves and clubs alike.

Bucie returned to sing another smash hit, Superman. The crowds went even crazier than before. She really knows how to rock the crowd.

The crowds went just as ballistic when another legend, Victor Ntoni, belted out Thetha Wathula Nje. It was something different, with Ntoni providing a sense of pride with the infusion of his traditional styled vocals.

The next song also didn’t have lead vocals. The background vocalists sang, with the help of the crowds as they screamed the words, Woo Woo Woza.

The last female vocalist for the night was Merissa Guzman, who sang Got To Go. She uttered before starting to belt it out, “I took 5 planes to get here.” Her vocals, as far as house music vocalists go, are incomparable.

Zano got the crowd eating out of the palm of his hands with the song Someday. He was the most lively and energetic performer up until that point. Towards the end of the song, Tumelo came back to join him as they battled it out. oh, big ups to Zano for providing the song titles with his Twitter commentary during the show

Black Coffee couldn’t have chosen a better performer to close the show in Zakes Bantwini. His stage presence, his charm, his moves that reminded me so much of James Brown, are unparalleled. He’s a true entertainer. Just before the end of Juju, he invited Black Coffee to the front for that infamous dance off they debuted at the Channel O Music Video Awards last year. The crowd went bananas! Before bidding farewell, they both sang the chorus of We Are One, which originally features Hugh Masekela.

The show was absolutely amazing! A beautiful spectacle of note. From the brilliant skills by the 24-piece KZNPRO orchestra to the vocal soloists (would have loved to see Malehloka brace the stage as well though), from Black Coffee‘s exceptional mixing skills to the overall entertainment, from the magnificent lighting to the perfectly tuned sound, it was truly a night to relish and remember. And I’ve got to mention that besides Black Coffee, I was mostly impressed by the percussionist who tirelessly and effortlessly gave us a sterling display of his skills.

I can’t wait for the DVD to come out in 2012, when I can re-live the phenomenal experience.

After Black Coffee‘s show, Vinny Da Vinci and Christos took to the decks, with DJ Strategy closing off the Vodacom Unlimited Festival. At this point I got some time to relax at one of the presidential suites. Those last few minutes of downtime were well worth all the running around the entire evening.

The second time was a more intimate gig at the Albert Park, also in Durban. The second time, particularly, gnaws on my mind still because I attended with a late friend of mine. But I digress.

You may have heard in the past few months that R&B crooner, who has nine albums under his belt, is returning to the country for a 2-city tour. I believe he is performing in Johannesburg tonight. Tomorrow, 18 December 2011, he gives Durban another taste of his magic.

The event takes place at the ICC from 7pm. Supporting him are our very own Zonke and Theo Kgosinkwe. I remember there was some bad blood between the two after it was revealed that Theo may not have accurately credited Zonke for their smash hit Thinking About You, which appears on Theo‘s sophomore album, Grateful. But that’s a thing of the past and I think they may even perform this song on stage.

Moreover, we have some great news for our Durban peeps. The organisers of the show and YEAHBO are giving away 3 double tickets to the show at the ICC tomorrow. As I mentioned to Brian after I listened to the music, I love this track. There are many things I like about it. Firstly, I appreciate that he toned down his vocals, which works perfectly for a more uptempo tune. Secondly, I totally dig the vocal arrangements. Even the background vocals are on point. The only let down are the horns featured on the production. I wish they were more sharp so that they stand out.

Brian Temba – Zanele (Update: Audio has been removed)

Now this, this right here, is a beautiful song. From the live instrumentation to the lyrics, to the vocal delivery. I can picture Brian singing it with a live band at a jazz festival. I can also picture Zanele‘s (the ladies) screaming their lungs out as he performs it. LOL. But seriously, I love the mellow, jazzy feel to it. A Zulu ballad has never sounded so wonderful.

And oh, happy birthday Brian. May the Lord grant you many, many more years so that you continue to bless us with your soul and inspiring words. May you have an effulgent one! Have a blast!

The members of the Academy once again selected an assorted blend of talent from all the corners of the globe. Although Kanye West leads the pack with seven nominations, it is our very own Ladysmith Black Mambazo that have, once again, made us proud.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo‘s Grammy history began in 1988 when they were nominated for their Shaka Zulu album and went on to win their first ever gong. Since then, they have featured on the coveted list fifteen times. This time around, they are going for their fourth Grammy, with the nomination of their Songs From A Zulu Farm album, in the Best World Music Album category.

Our pride in Black Mambazo continues to grow deeper and deeper as they keep putting us on the global map with their indigenous, rich sound. Also placing our continent in the spolight, and nominated against Black Mambazo are other African heavyweights, including Nigeria‘s Femi Kuti and Malian band Tinariwen. By the way, Tinariwen are no strangers to the Grammy‘s themselves, having recently been part of Herbie Hancock‘s Grammy-winning Imagine Project last year.

Other highlights at next year’s awards, as mentioned above, include Kanye West, leading with a whopping seven nods. What I found interestingly confusing is that even though he has been nominated for most of the general categories, he failed to garner the Album Of The Year nomination.

Hot on Kanye’s heels are Adele, Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars, with six nods apiece. Lil Wayne, who is headed for South Africa for a series of concerts this December, is nominated for five Grammy‘s, while his label mates Drake, and Niki Minaj are nominated for four Grammy‘s each.

Some of my other favourites include Kelly Price who appears on the list three times, two of those with Mint Condition‘s Stokley Williams for their collaboration on the song Not My Daddy, off Mint Condition‘s aptly titled album, 7.

Also noteworthy and interesting is the nomination of former Destiny’s Child members Beyonce and Kelly Rowland in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category. Beyonce is contesting for her retro party anthem named…err…Party, with Andre 3000; and Kelly for her sexually charged Lil Wayne-featured Motivation.

The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards will take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles on the 12th of February 2012.

The enormous demand for Lil Wayne concert tickets at the Wavehouse, Durban on 11 December 2011 has led to local promoter, Canoc Productions and media partner Channel O announcing an additional concert at the Wavehouse, Umhlanga on Monday, 12 December 2011. Tickets now on sale at Computicket.

The popularity of Lil Wayne, the world’s number one hip hop artist is unsurpassed across the globe with fans flocking to see this phenomenal musician and lyricist perform live on stage. His popularity extends throughout South Africa and the reaction by local fans to next month’s “I Am Still Music” tour to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban is no exception. The Vodacom Unlimited Experience, thunders into Durban on Friday, 16 December 2011 on a massive scale with an epic 12 hour house music party at Moses Mabhida stadium.

Black Coffee’s AfricaRising, makes its hotly anticipated debut, featuring Black Coffee live with a 24-piece orchestra, conducted by Brendan Jury, along with a host of guest artists – Bucie, Zakes Bantwini and Mabi Thobejane amongst others – performing the tracks that have made Black Coffee an international phenomenon.

Black Coffee will be joined on the bill by Spiritchaser, creators of SA’s biggest hit in 2011, “These Tears”, which hit number one on radio studios across the country, and by Low Deep T, rising deep house star currently climbing the charts with Big Love.

Other internationals on the bill include Rocco and Ralf Gum, two of SA’s favourite remixers, as well as Franck Roger.

The big hitting local DJ power comes in the form of Metro FM’s Urban Beat residents, Vinny da Vinci and DJ Christos, Oskido, Andy X, Black Motion, House Afrika label don Tim White and festival founder DJ Strat3gy.

The artists will perform on a massive purpose built stage that uses the spectacular stadium to best effect. And despite its scale only 25,000 tickets go on sale at R150.00 from www.ticketpros.co.za and all Postnet outlets from (Wednesday).

Although I have watched their shows on DVD, I had never attended any of them, since the gospel outfit’s inception over 15 years ago. Having been an avid fan of their first 5 recordings, I decided to attend this past Sunday‘s show at Montecasino‘s Teatro.

Owing to the title of this write up, I’m going to state the good alongside the bad, as I experienced. Joyous Celebration Rewind was a tight event. The production was top-notch, although the sound was not consistent. The choreography by Somizi Mhlongo blended nicely with the performances. Most of the vocalists were amazing in their delivery.

When we walked in, the dancers were about to finish doing one of their numbers. Some of the highlights include Unathi Mzekeli performing Ngibambe Ngesandla. Especially when conductor Lindelani Mkhize joined him, dancimg to the crowd’s delight. Although most of the singers did a great job, I would have preferred the songs sung by the original members. Like Nthabiseng who sang Change. I could hear the late Wendy Mseleku do the original in my mind. Also, the guy who did a medley of songs, including Bambelela (Ekuphileni), was good, however, not as great as Pastor Benjamin Dube was in the originals.

A definite stand out was when Mthunzi Namba led the choir through a few of their hits, old and new. His impeccable piano skills and raspy voice guided the choir that was so harmonious and crisp. Thabo Mdluli and his wife Nonhlanhla‘s duet also counts amongst the best of the night.

Also noteworthy is Bukiwe Tiwani who had the crowds eating out of a palm of her hands with her baritone voice. If I didn’t know better, I would have said it was Hlengiwe Mhlaba, minus the heavy weight. The crowds stood up from the time she entered the stage until she disappeared behind the stage, clapping and singing along.

Another highlight was a guy who started a medley of songs that started with You’ll Be There. He then broke into Walk In Jerusalem. I’m convinced that I may have loved this medley because I was thinking of Sharon Dee who originally did this gem made popular to me by Rory Block. He ended the medley with The Williams Brothers‘ I’m Just A Nobody.

Again, the show and the singers were good. However, I would have preferred to see the likes of Nokukhanya Dlamini, Swazi Dlamini, Vicky Vilakazi, Margaret Motsage, Tshepo Tsola, Well (Emthonjeni), Sharon Dee, Pastor Benjamin Dube, etc, reprise their roles on the older Joyous Celebration material. Even Asanda Bam was given a different song. I’m glad though that she did an amazing job with it.

The six piece band consisting of two keyboardists, a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer, and a pianist, played beautifully. The choir, as I have mentioned, also sang beautifully. There were moments though that the choir sounded louder that the lead vocalists. I guess we can blame that to the sound controllers.

There were not that many celebrities at the show, but I spotted David Tlale enjoying himself. He was actually sitting in the row in front of mine. During the interval he asked me why I was taking a picture of him while he was in church (the side-eye on the picture above says it all. LOL). Speaking of which, another gripe I had was that we were not allowed to take pictures. I guess because the show was being recorded.

Anyway, although I was kinda disappointed, I still enjoyed myself. MTN Joyous Celebration is recording their 16th project on 15 December 2011 at Carnival City. Be on the look out for ticket details in the next few weeks.
