From skateboarders to beat-boxers, from b-boy’s to hip hop artists, from graffiti artists to street balling, it was all a ball of fun as masses congregated to witness one of the most unique events I’ve ever attended. The Arts on Main streets were closed off, with different activities taking place around the venue. Buildings and other warehouses were specifically set up and decorated with each of the exhibitors in mind.

Although it was kinda crazy, I did manage to visit as many exhibitors as possible; from Puma to New Balance; from Bench to Nike; and even Butan. Speaking of Nike, I signed up to go into the highly secure booth where a pair of only 1500 Nike‘s produced around the world, that are being auctioned for over $1 million to benefit Michael J Fox‘s charity (to find cure for Parkinson‘s disease), were safely guarded in a glass box. Before seeing these Nike shoes, we were shown a commercial demonstrating how powerful they are, and how they came about.

While enjoying all the activities STR.CRD had to offer, I ran into a few familiar faces. Here are some of them.

Siya Ngwekazi was the MC at the music and dance stage. This get up, I’m not so sure. Doesn’t he look like a dictator from some African country? But it’s so him. He’s got his own brand of style that works for him. Most of the time.

Another stylish boy is Khaya, a.k.a. Bhubesi. How cool is that ensemble? Even the hair and accessories. When I saw him he told me he had just finished performing. Unfortunately I missed his performance.

Spotted Ricky Rik enjoying what the b-boys were doing on stage. I met him for the first time at the Durban July. He’s a cool dude.

Actor Thapelo Mokoena was at the same spot. Seems that’s the stage or activity that attracted more people. I guess you can never go wrong with music and dance.

Remember this guy? If I’m not mistaken, it’s the same guy who played Archie‘s twin son on Generations way back. His name is Tafadzwa something. He does look a bit different.

Are these guys twins? I had to do a double take. I think one of them presented that Masters Of Dance show on Vuzu. They were at the stand where graffiti artists were customising sneakers for the patrons who had bought some. Dude who customised my New Balance shoe at the Russian Bear Vodka party was part of it.

Integrated creative and production resource leader FroLab was there as part of the programme. He also enjoyed some of the other activities, including shopping.

When I was leaving, Channel O and Vuzu‘s Dineo was arriving. On top of the great talent she possesses, she’s such a nice girl.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to enjoy the STR.CRD experience to its entirety because I had to leave rather early. I feel salty that I didn’t even get to see Ill Skillz or Bhubesi perform. There was a VIP party at the rooftop of PopArt, but when it didn’t start as scheduled, I bounced. I dashed out to see more stalls that were packed with clothing and kicks before I left the venue.

Well done and congratulations to Hardy McQueen and his team for planning and carrying out such a successful event. I can’t wait to see who they bring through for next year’s edition. And hopefully, I’ll get to attend from start to end. I wonder which city will play host next year….*goes away to chat with Hardy to find out.*

The festival that blends the urban culture disciples such as hip hop, clothing, graffiti, skateboarding, street balling, etc, is back for a second year run. And around this time, it’s moving to the city of gold, Jozi.

The international artists and guests on the bill for the 2011 edition of STR.CRD are all masters in their chosen fields. Below is a brief profile of each.

Theophilus London: Is Hip Hop’s latest name, he’s also a famous newsbeat music reporter, who has worked with Mark Ronson and Damon Albarn. According to critics, London’s “genre-bending approach draws from a range of styles, from soul-pop and post-punk to electro and contemporary R&B,” citing influences that include Michael Jackson and Prince as well as Kraftwerk and the Smiths.” His debut LP is “Times are Weird these Days.”

Va$htie: Downtown’s Sweetheart, is an artist, director, designer, party promoter and entrepreneur. She re-vamped the company of Island Def Jam, is the first female to have designed a Jordan with Nike, and launched her own signature brand VIOLETTE, carried at specialty boutiques like Colette in Paris.

Masta Lee: Amsterdam resident and DJ. His day job at Patta/Precinct 5 involves much of the fashion we love. He lives by the slogan “different ears for different music”, so you’ll be sure to hear something just perfect for you.

Woody: Founder and Editor of Sneaker Freaker Magazine, one of the most important and iconic sneakerhead publications in the world. He has over 2000 pairs of sneakers in his collection.

Royalefam: SBTG’s apparel label. Their sneaker customs have attracted the likes of Kobe Bryant, Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn of Linkin Park, James Lavelle, and Q-tip just to name a few. “Evolve Beyond” is their brand motto.

Levi Maestro: Video blogger and tastemaker “Maestro Knows” is an online show based around Levi’s day to day life, showing you his friends and experiences through his eyes, from all over the world.

Frolab: is an integrated creative and production resource, based around the concept of “frolaboration”. Cultural archivist Frolab provides an outlet for urbanites thirsting for authentic experiences that embrace hip hop, art and design.

Patta: A unique streetwear store offering the coolest kicks and outfits and making unknown or hard-to-find brands and items accessible for anyone interested.

Adam “King Adz” Stone: is a writer and creative/director who specializes in the creation and documentation of content (still and moving) of Youth Culture. He has traveled constantly for the last 15 years examining global youth talent and sub-cultures and has been lucky enough to work with some of the most influential and interesting people around, including: Banksy, Tony Kaye, Shepard Fairey, Irvine Welsh, Shawn Stussy, Tama Janovitz, Blek Le Rat, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Martha Cooper, Erik Kessels, and Jonas Ackerlund.

Fro Lab

On the local front, Spaza Shop Boys, Bhubesi, Dirty Paraffin, AKA, Ill-Skills, Khuli Chana, MT Kidu, Desmond and the Tutus, BLK JKS, P.H.Fat and Haezer, will be holding it down.

The STR.CRD event takes place on Saturday, 24th September in the Maboneng Precinct (Fox Street) downtown Jozi. The doors open at 10am and the activities will be happening until early hours of Sunday morning.

It had been a while since I attended an event in Jozi so I was rather excited to get back into the game. After trying to find the Art On Main address where the event was held for about 30 minutes, I finally figured it out. I had been on the same street for the launch of Liz Ogumbo‘s album, but for the life of me, that part of town seemed to not be any familiar.

Nevertheless, it was great that I spotted some familiar faces as soon as I entered the door. That’s another reason I wanted to attend the event, to reconnect with my peers and some of the people I have met in the scene. Another eye-catching fixture was the New Balance sneaker display that featured many ranges of their shoes. I’m a huge sneaker fan so my heart skipped a lot when I saw those dope kicks all over the place. And of course, another stand where our other halves of the shows were decked out. Moreover, there were graffiti artists that personalised the sneakers that were given to us. They did their magic on mine by writing YEAHBO. It’s a pity I didn’t bring the other half, so they only did the graffiti on one half.

In the midst of the party, Hardy McQueen, the originator of the upcoming street culture festival, STR.CRD, that also features different sneaker brands, walked in with his old new balance kicks. We joked around about him representing at the event. He later told me during a meeting at his office that New Balance is making a HUGE come back. It was clearly evident from the Big Ideas Session.

As part of the entertainment, DJ Dimplez was one of the DJ’s who gave us some revered hip hop tunes. The Reps were billed to perform but because they were extremely late (their manager Tshiamo Letshwene told me they had been travelling from a gig at the Vaal), and by the time they got to the venue I had decided to leave, therefore I didn’t get to see them.

Amongst the faces I spotted were female model Lerato Moloi, male model and actor Stevel Marc, TV and radio presenter Siya Ngwekazi, comedian Loyiso Gola and Mini Dlamini who was shooting for Mzansi Insider.

Model Lerato Moloi who seems to be a socialite of note since divorcing her ex-husband. No shade though, she must do her thing, like all of us.

Hip hop artist, actor and former Yo-TV actor Psyfo was there. He is actually a nice chap. We chatted briefly about Kuli Roberts making him stand in a queue to be interviewed. He ended up ducking away. LOL

Comedian Loyiso Gola just stood there with his shoe(s) like a zombie. He could have been more lively or smile a little. I mean, didn’t the new season of Late Night News With Loyiso Gola just premiere its third season?

Now this is how you work the camera. Loyiso should take notes. The ever jovial Siya Ngwekazi was there in his usual stylishly quirky self.

Here is another guy who knows how to pose for the camera, model Stevel Marc. Ok, maybe he has an advantage because it comes with his job. Stevel always wears his big smile every where he goes. Big ups to him for that. He told me he had his sneakers customised with the word Jamaica, paying homage to his birth country.

It was a fun night, filled with great people and awesome conversations. I got to catch up with some of my peeps I haven’t seen in months. Thank you so much to Raphael Benza and his Vth Season team for the hook up.

Bold and the Beautiful star Jacqueline MacInness Wood

Yes, you read correctly. David Tlale will have the Mandela Bridge closed for his show. Jo’burg Fashion Week is underway and his 2011 Autumn/Winter collection will be showcased at the historic landmark as the grand finale to the week long fashion event. “The City of Johannesburg is buzzing with vibrant energy, urban structures and all that is reflective of the 21st Century Africa and it boasts one of the most respected statesman, Madiba, as its resident. So, I will send out 92 models down the Nelson Mandela Bridge, each one representing every year that Madiba has lived: his age. This is huge,” boasted Tlale.

It was also revealed earlier today that popular actress Jacqueline MacInness Wood will be part of the action. MacInness Wood, who plays Steffy Forrester in the enduringly popular SABC1 soapie The Bold And The Beautiful, is in South Africa with fellow Bold actors Brandon Beemer (Owen Knight) and Jack Wagner (Nick Marone) for a three-city tour, visiting selected shopping malls to meet their fans. The actress will be strutting her stuff on the runway in Tlale couture in the collection dubbed Made in the City.

Don’t miss this chance to witness history in the making on the Mandela Bridge – where beautiful international stars, fashion and jewellery will light up the City of Gold on the final night of Joburg Fashion Week. I definitely want to witness this monumental experience.

There was a press conference at the beginning of the event where the CEO of the company Jean-Peirre Lutgen, as well as Marketing Manager of ICE Watches South Africa, Fadwa Mohamed briefed the media in attendance. Unfortunately I missed the bulk of the press conference but caught a glimpse of the stylish and classy setup. For a moment after the press conference it seemed like a boring party. An hour later, things started warming up.

There was entertainment galore. The kid from SA’s Got Talent that is been given the moniker Justin Bieber because of his uncanny resemblance (even the hair style) to the teen star opened things up. He displayed his impeccable dance moves, arousing screams and claps from the crowds that had their eyes glued to the stage. Following him was Steven Lee. Steven boasts an achievement only a few can dream of, that of recently working with super producer and artist Wyclef Jean. Although his singing is not the best, he made up for it with his smooth dance moves. His flair at doing kasi dance styles is unmistakable. He also left the spectators wanting more.

After Steven‘s performance we were treated to a fashion show where male and female modes strutted their stuff wearing the different collections of the unisex ICE watches. Fully decked out on both their arms, the rest of the guests that didn’t get to see the watches on display earlier during the press briefing had a perfect opportunity to revel in the beauty of the colourful arm accessories.

The highlight of the night though goes to a lady who was tied upside down by her ankles to a chandelier. In her revealing white hot pants and and matching bodice, she danced and even unhooked the bottles of champagne also hanged on the chandelier to pour it for the guests. I found that very fascinating, to say the least.

After her performance and the masses enjoying the bubbly, 5 domino cakes each modeled after a watch were cut. Whoever wanted a piece helped themselves. After the feast the party continued. What started slowly and somewhat boring turned out to be an amazing party with lots of fun. Snacks and free drinks were available throughout the night. And we were gifted with our own ICE watches. Talk about ending the night with a bang!

Although there were not many celebrities there (I think most had left for the J&B Met taking place in Cape Town this weekend), there was a sizeable amount of familiar faces. Here are some of those faces:

We went through a vigorous process to decide on the winner which we are about to announce. One of the requirements was that you needed to be following us on Twitter to be eligible. Most of the entries that we received did not adhere to this requirement, therefore were disqualified. From some of those that did, they didn’t answer all the questions or answered them incorrectly. After sifting through those, we went through another fact-checking and auditing process to ensure fair competition.

I know for a fact that it’s difficult finding clothing for men that suits our respective personalities. Some can always go to fashion designers for the fitted clothing that show their style, but it is too pricey.That is why it’s such a blessing when one finds a store that is able to achieve all these things.

Inventive fashion designer David Tlale is adding another stripe into his sleeve as shoe designer. I guess it was inevitable that he would make this move as shoes are part of his craft as a fashion designer. The always eccentric but sometimes elegant thread smith has inked a partnership deal with Luella Shoes whereby he will provide their outlets with 6 different styles of shoes from December 2010.

According to the press release, the collection of the shoes ranges from bejewelled pumps, beaded sandals to ballet pumps. Judging by the look of this gladiator sandal in the picture, ladies are in for a treat this summer.

David Tlale said, “We had such a positive response to our David Tlale/Luella fusion shoes last year and the ladies told me how much they love the sexy elegance, not to mention, confidence that collection gave them.” He added, “This year, I thought it would be best to continue with that sexy elegance, but give it more comfort and grace,” he adds.

As you know, there are always the well dressed, ones that make you cringe, and some that you just can’t decide if they are a yay or a nay. Here they all are:

Businesswoman and DJ Ganyani‘s manager Bhoza looked stunning in this white gown designed by Reggie of RJKay (is it still called RJKay since the lovers split both on the business and romance levels?). Anyway, one of my favourites for the night.

Although I like the design of the dress, the top part in this dress worn by Asanda Bam seems too busy. But who am I to speak? At least I can’t say it was just placed there because I can see the lines picking up the same fabric on the skirt part.

Arthur Mafokate in a grey suit. He’s with his twin daughters, Pale and Chomee. Or is it identical wives-to-be? Channeling Jay-Z with MaKhumalo and the other wives during his inauguration last year there, Arthur? I see you.

These are Arthur and Chomee‘s dancers. I was at a loss for words. At first I thought Fantasia made a surprise appearance with her cousins, then imagined chickens with colourful feathers. Sheer buffoonery, I tell ya.

Two-thirds of Big Nuz. As much as I feel blinded by that shiny suit and mistakened Mampintsa for Happy Feet, I’ve gotta say I give them props for the effort this time around. I wonder where the third member was at this point. He was probably kicked out intentionally because he may have not adhered to the group’s look. That boy’s always looking raggedy and stoned.

Bonang looked radiant in this sleeveless gold Gert creation. She never disappoints, she looks hot from her head to her toes.

Another who opted for gold is Brian Temba‘s manager Mandisa Makalima. One can never go wrong with a dark-blue jeans and blazer combo, as seen here on Brian. A lighter top would have worked much better though. They make a lovely couple, don’t they? I’m just kidding.

The buckle on that belt Brown Dash?! And who told General that he can wear black shoes with brown pants? Especially after deciding to make everything else brown. Couldn’t you get former fellow group member Mandoza to hook you up with Ephymol‘s contacts? Or was that Nyaope cheque not enough?

Claire Mawisa wore the hell out of this dress designed by Thula Sindi. The way it accentuates her curves alone gets points.

Er, a blend of Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs much? I thought you were uniquely creative David Tlale? At least it wasn’t a short skirt, but just short pants. Can you imagine?

Deep Level made an effort too. I see Hoodlum took a page out of David Tlale‘s book. But I’m glad he kept his bermuda shorts below the knee.

Dineo Ranaka was shooting for Club 808. She looked hot in this jumpsuit. Only she could pull that off. That body! HOT!

DJ Cleo looked so much smarter than he did at the SAMA‘s earlier this year. Is it me or he doesn’t like wearing jackets/blazers?

DJ Fisherman looked sharp in a black tux. He’s here with DJ Tira who looks better than what he wore at the Channel O Awards a few weeks ago.

The boys from Jozi decided to tone it down. Well, Da Les anyway because Morabe seldom dresses up.

Judith Sephuma rocked a red frock with thin strips. It suits her.

Generations‘ Katlego Danke looked beautiful in this black number. And the length works well too. I overheard Siya Ngwekazi asking if she has a man or not. So, if she doesn’t, we might see a new couple in town.

Khanyi Mbau knows how to choose her dresses most of the times. This looks stunning. The accessories match perfectly as well.

Rapper Khuli Chana opted for a casual look as well. But I thought those glasses had gone out of fashion with Obama‘s one year presidential anniversary?

Lelo Boyana, editor of Just Curious, wore a Gert dress as well. Looks very playful with the peach pumps.

7‘s editor Lesly Mofokeng kept it simple with a the blue/violet suit and a white dress shirt.

Lulo Cafe looks dashing in an all-black ensemble. This is more or less what guys should look like at award functions. A dash of colour here and there would have made this look perfect though.

Here is another guy who got it right. And Lunga Shabalala is just a newbie after winning the Calvin Klein underwear model competition earlier this year. This boy is smart, and definitely going far.

L’Vovo is dead set on this look. Didn’t he get into legal troubles for using it for his album cover? Jay-Z‘s American Gangsta must have made quite an impression on him.

Nutty Nys and Miza deserve props for looking smart. Nice one guys.

Mpho Maboi in an olive green one-shoulder dress, accessorised with a black belt and black shoes. I’m getting used to seeing her in dresses. I like.

Oskido? No, no, no senhor. Your lady went all out and all you could do was that? Did you not want to be there? You looked very smart at the DJ Black Coffee Foundation gala dinner. Why couldn’t you do the same here?

Penny Lebyane looked good in this simple knee-length dress. I’m just glad she covered those thighs up. That ish ain’t sexy to show to the public.

Professor looked like he was on his way to some club gig. At lease he wore a blazer to change it up a bit.

Bab’ Ray Phiri was his usual animated self. I introduced myself and told him how great they were at the LAUNCH of their new album. He is so respectful and humble. He even told me he was going to google me to see the review I wrote after the launch. Technologically clued up too, I see. LOL

Metro FM‘s Sentle Lehoko wore a black suit, breaking black colours with a pink shirt.

Sandi and Romeo Mabasa co-ordinated their outfits well. Sandi‘s dress and Romeo‘s shirt are by aamFAB, her fashion label.

That’s how Refiloe‘s (from Metro FM) David Tlale dress looks from the back. It’s one of the stunning dresses from the night. And she carried it well.

Two-thirds of Shana, Demor and Shota, looked the part two. Only Black Coffee was missing to make this a perfect picture.

Simphiwe Dana with her partner. I know the girls have been going gaga over dude since he appeared with her on the cover of True Love. So ladies, eat your hearts out. This is as close as you’ll get to him. LOL. As for Simphiwe‘s dress, nice recylce work for the plastic part at the bottom.

Siya Ngwekazi tried the punk rock look. Did he pull it off? I’m indifferent about it. Oh, those are the Vintage YSL boots he said he was given to by his father.

DJ Siyanda, with his wife? She could have tossed that Niecy Nash thingie on her head away, this isn’t the Durban July. Hairpieces are not necessary.

Speedy with Sipho Hotstix Mabuse. I like how young and fun Hotstix made his look. I vote YES. As for Speedy, I’ve lost hope. Really.

Now Stoan knows how to dress. He’s always on point. But why don’t you give your boy Speedy some tips Stoan? I guess the ode that you can’t teach class holds true in this instance.

And the top prize of the evening is Thami Ngubeni. She looks ravishing. From the first moment I saw her I was taken. I must admit though that at some point I was like, is she trying to re-live her days and compensate for the fact that she was a Miss SA reject? But then I looked at her again and decided, nah, no shade for this one.

Tina thought she was going for an audition for Alice In Wonderland. The only thing missing is a different hat on Prosper‘s head, The Hatter‘s one.

The only thing I was thinking about when I saw T’zozo was whether he regrets breaking away from the group. Especially seeing his former group mate Professor‘s shine right now. As for that jacket, it looks like it was done by a first year fashion design student at those fashion academies on Victoria Street in Durban.

I love Winnie and her energy. But, did she get yanked into a bus to Mbombela while she was on her way to the saloon?

All I’m going to say is Zakes Bantwini is brave to rock such bold colours. It’s carefully thought though, so I’ll give him props for that.

I really don’t know how I feel about Zizo Beda‘s dress. It looks like something a 50 year old would wear. C’mon Zizo, you are young. Have some fun. You don’t have to show us your booty like Khanyi Mbau did, but show us a young spirit. Ok, maybe I do know how I feel about her dress.

It was basically a sporting event held at the root top of the centre where different teams from indoor soccer, to skateboarding, snowboarding and other extreme sport codes competed from Friday until Sunday midday when the finals took place.

We were invited by Converse SA as they were part of the sponsorship team that made this event an immense success. We only managed to get there on Saturday evening. Although we didn’t catch much, we saw a few soccer teams doing their thing in the specially built court. We also managed to catch a band that was rehearsing at the stage next to the court.

For our trouble, the kind and generous people at Converse SA are giving us 2 pairs (his and hers) of sneakers to give away to 2 lucky people who belong to the YEAHBO family.
