The highly anticipated Viva Riva!, a film by Congolese director Djo Munga, will finally get to be seen by the masses throughout the continent. The film sizzled at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It has since participated in more film festivals around the world, including our very own Durban International Film Festival a few months ago. Moreover, Viva Riva! went on to win various awards, the biggest honour being the recent MTV Movie Awards... 

The inaugural Mzansi Love Soul music extravaganza that took place on the Heritage Day weekend was, despite a few glitches, a soaring success. I have seen John Legend perform live three times now. The first time, it was his first visit in the country in 2005, not long after the release of his debut album Get Lifted. I remember it so well because I even attended the press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton. Another reason it gnaws on my mind still is because his opening act at the Standard Bank Arena was the late Lebo Mathosa. And that would be the last time I saw Lebo perform live... 

The second annual street culture festival, STR.CRD, took place this past Saturday at Johannesburg‘s Maboneng Precinct. For the first time in Jozi, after its successful debut run in the Mother City last year, Joburgers got a taste of blend of activities synonymous with street culture. From skateboarders to beat-boxers, from b-boy’s to hip hop artists, from graffiti artists to street balling, it was all a ball of fun as masses congregated...

Last night I tagged along to the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City to have a glimpse of what to expect at the musical extravaganza aptly dubbed Mzansi Love Soul taking place later this evening. Just as I entered backstage, there Brian Temba was, waiting for his turn as he watched Afrotraction do his his thing during the rehearsals. It was great to see him, in his new dread-lock-less look.
