The girls in the Idols SA Top 18 sizzle

By on July 24, 2012

Last week MNet invited me to the group shows of the Top 18 contestants of the reality singing competition Idols SA. The shows where each of the hopefuls performed were held at Soweto Theatre. I wasn’t able to make it for the first half on Monday where the boys battled it out. However, I did attend the girls segment on Thursday.

This marked some firsts for me. To begin with, I had never attended the recording of Idols SA since its inception. Or any of the stages of the show for that matter. It was also my first time at the recently built and open Soweto Theatre. I must say, from what I saw, it’s a beautiful establishment. But let’s get back to the business at hand.

There were three ladies, from the 9, that left a great impression on me. Tshidi‘s voice was a powerhouse as she belted out And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going. Made popular by Jennifer Holiday and Jennifer Hudson on the stage and on the film, respectively, versions of Dreamgirls; Tshidi gave the song her own signature.

The second girl that highly impressed me was Maryke. Her powerful and striking voice is undeniable. She sang Aretha Franklin‘s Rock Steady, giving it a sexy and spunky twist. Completing the trio was Nosipho, who also opted for an Aretha Franklin number. Her energy as she confidently sang R.E.S.P.E.C.T. was infectious. It actually got the whole theatre in a frenzy.

The rest of the performances were good, with some actually registering under par. As for the boys, I can’t make a call yet since I missed their show. But from what I hear, Khaya maintained his standing as a ball of unmistakable talent. I’ve also heard that Simphiwe was quite impressive.

From these 9 girls and 9 boys, a top 10 list will be revealed at a live show to be broadcast from Soweto Theatre this coming Sunday, 29 July 2012. If you voted, you better tune in to see if your favourite made it to those that will be singing every week at the live shows, in a effort to win the coveted title and prize. In addition to the 3 girls I liked above, my other favourites that should make it to the Top 5 girls are Shekhinah and Chloe. As for the boys, from what I’ve seen or heard about, I think Khaya, Monde, Simphiwe, Obakeng and Dumi should advance to the next round.

Back to last Thursday, here are few celebrities that attended the recording.

The beautiful Minnie Dlamini was there with her brother. Don’t you just love how Minnie‘s career has flourished since leaving Live?!

Anele Mdoda, radio presenter, TV presenter, and now author, was there to support. She’s so sweet. She just laughed off the stuff I whispered to her about her date.

One of the judges of Idols SA, Unathi Msengana, looked angelic in this Asanda Madyibi designed dress.

Wow nice! I’ve also never attended the recording of Idols SA. From my experience in watching the Idols from TV , it seems very much the show to go for! There is a lot of talent in SA, hope I will make it to the live show next time!!!
