UJU – Free

This is UJU’s debut album and is suitably titled after their tireless efforts to get their music out there for the masses. Although it may not be as original an idea, there is a gap in the music industry right now for their sound and spirit.

Free is a great collection of songs filled with incredible melodies, remarkable music in the form of the fusion of percussion, bass guitar, rhythm guitar and a combination of vocals and spoken word. Ntuthu Ndlovu sizzles on both vocals and spoken words, transporting the soul to a unique storytelling world that paints a vivid portrait of our society. Also impressive is percussionist Wandile Molebatsi, in addition to dabbling in harmonica and some vocals and chants.

The title track is one of the songs that stands out from the album because of its vibrant and consistent tone. Iqhalaqhala has the maskandi feel, but also veers away at some point because of the hip hop DJ scratching; which results in a very fascinating sound altogether. Another song that left a rather appealing impression is the last song, Ngilahlekile (I’m Lost) because of its rock feel, or perhaps because of the way the rhythmic guitar is played.

If Free is anything to go by, UJU have a great career ahead of them. They just have to keep the momentum they have initiated. And, judging by the talent of the respective individuals members in the band possess, that shouldn’t be an issue at all.
