Jonathan ButlerThe Cape Town-born jazz maestro has just completed this year’s successful run at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival where he once gain wowed the crowds with his eponymous sounds. His latest album is titled So Strong, reflecting his relationship with God and where he is in his life right now. So Strong consists of a collection of immaculately produced and arranged songs. Butler shows his comfortability here. He provides his signature style, but keeps it fresh still. It’s a marvel to listen to, from start to finish.
Keke Wyatt
You may remember the Angela Winbush and Rene song Keke Wyatt did with Avant called My First love, which made her a household name on Mzansi’s quiet storm radio. She has returned with a new studio album titled Who Knew? On her new offering she fuses up-tempo songs with slow ballads where she is able to flex her strong vocal muscles.
Kirk Whalum
The prolific saxophonist gives us the third installment of Gospel According To Jazz. This time around Kirk Whalum invites more established musicians in their own rights, including the velvet-voiced Lalah Hathaway, George Duke, and Peanut Whalum, amongst others. His ability to give the respective musicians their shine, at the same time not allowing to be overshadowed is amazing. Another strength of his is the way he interprets these songs to give them a fresh appeal. An example is the Diane Warren-written Because You Loved Me, featuring Duke on a piano solo; as well Luther Vandross‘ Make Me A Believer with Hathaway on the vocals.
Maysa
This unique voice is more popular for her stint as part of the jazz/funk band Incognito. She has recorded numerous solo albums over the years. With Woman In Love, her new album, she adds to that impressive catalogue. Woman In Love consists of beautiful melodies and precise elements that are found in the jazz genre. Her vocals are their ever-lasting poignant and smooth, with a hint of subtle edginess. One of the songs that stands out is the duet she does with soul crooner Will Downing.
