It was announced this week that the winner of the Class Act television show will be the star of a new South African action film currently in development. After an emotional journey that saw ten contestants battle it out for the chance to win the once in a lifetime first prize, only three remain. The public has voted, the judges have guided the contestants and on the 5th of June, one of them will be cast as the leading man in a new South African movie.
The film has a working title of ‘Ghetto Dangerous’ and is an exciting cop thriller in the style of The Departed. It will be directed by award winning director Donovan Marsh, and executive produced by Tendeka Matatu and produced by Curious Pictures. The film is a star vehicle for the winner who will play ex-gangster turned cop, Chili Bhibiza. Filming is planned to commence later this year and will be released, through Matatu’s company, Ten10 Films, in the first half of 2011.
The top three Class Acts, as voted for by their South African fans are Danny Ross who hails from Worcester in the Western Cape, Sdumo Mtshali from Montclair in KZN and Muzi Clive from Bramley in Johannesburg.
Over the past eleven weeks, viewers have been glued to the Class Act reality show as they witnessed the passion and commitment that goes into becoming a film star. The popularity of Class Act has been building week after week, culminating with the announcement that it has attained a position in the top 10 of most watched TV shows. With tens of thousands of votes cast each week by loyal fans it is clear that Class Act has become an instant hit.
Each week the judges commented on scenes that were screened, they were at times complimentary, and at times downright brutal, but ultimately it remained up to the viewers to vote for their favourite Class Act. “We are tasked with helping to identify SA’s next leading man. This is SA’s toughest film audition and Class Act has definitely exposed some awesome talent. The top three have what it takes, now it’s up to the viewers to decide who will win”, says Class Act Judge and Executive Producer of the forthcoming movie, Tendeka Matatu.
In addition to the lead role in the new movie, the winner of Class Act, will receive an MLA agency representation contract, 8 weeks in the USA at the New York Film Academy learning from the best in showbiz and the lead role in an Amstel TV commercial. The second placed contestant will go to Los Angeles in the USA to LA Actors Boot Camp for a six week intensive acting course, and also be represented by MLA for six months. The third placed Class Act will also enjoy MLA representation for six months and a twelve week intensive acting course with international acting/teaching doyenne, Dorothy Gould.
The idea behind the Class Act reality series was to create a leading man for South African film, and to expose the raw, untapped talent that is available to the industry. Amstel Lager together with Donovan Marsh announced the possibility of a movie at the launch, and everyone involved in this successful show on SABC1 is proud that this goal has been achieved. “When we launched Class Act in January this year, we were excited that we would create the opportunity for people to show their passion and commitment in order to reach the ultimate dream of becoming a movie star. Now with the announcement of the leading role in a new movie for the Class Act winner we are more than delivering on that promise” says Jan-Willem Van Wensem, Marketing Manager of Amstel.
