The Queen of hip-hop/soul, Mary J Blige, is back with a brand new 15-track album entitled Stronger With Each Tear.
The first few songs are your usual radio-friendly songs with complex production and Blige‘s own instrument, her voice, being just a simple feature. The second part of the songs showcases her talent as a strong singer and a prolific writer. For example, as much as Good Love, where she features rapper T.I., is a radio jam, it has a charm reminiscent of funky and retro sounds. Each Tear and Stronger, two songs forming the album title, stay true to her signature sound she has perfected over the years.
With all her recent albums, there is that song that captures my attention and spirit from the very first few notes. This happened with I Found My Everything In You from The Breakthrough and Talk To Me off Growing Pains; and this time that gem is In The Morning. You know that song that you can play a million times at one go and never get tired of?
Other highlights include Color, which I was first introduced to and was featured on the soundtrack of the film Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire; as well as a jam that starts out in a mellow mood but ends up with massive rock elements, Stairway To Heaven. On both these songs Blige flexes her vocal muscles to give us stellar performances.
